BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? Mali's interim president returned home Friday, two months after seeking medical treatment in France when he was badly beaten by protesters who back a coup leader hanging onto power.

Dioncounda Traore became the country's president in April after the soldiers behind a March coup agreed in principle to hand over power to an interim civilian government. The coup leader, though, has shown no signs of leaving.

In May, his supporters broke through a security cordon and attacked Traore in his office. He was brought unconscious to a hospital, and demonstrators were seen hoisting his bloody tie and shoe in celebration.

The protesters are believed to have been aided by soldiers loyal to the military junta that grabbed power in March and who are unhappy by the transition back to a civilian-led government.

Many Malians believed that Traore would not return to the western African nation after being so gravely wounded.

"I think Dioncounda Traore is brave to make the decision to come back," said Binta Sangare, a student at the University of Bamako. "In reality, though, I don't like him as a transitional president, but if he is the way out of this crisis, we don't really have a choice."

Traore, the former head of Mali's national assembly, is a seen as a close ally of the president who was ousted by coup leader Capt. Amadou Sanogo.

Although the March coup reversed two decades of democracy in Mali, many have expressed support for the military takeover because of frustration with the previous regime, which was seen as inept and corrupt.

After the coup, ethnic Tuareg rebels seeking secession took control of the country's north ? an area larger than France ? but were driven out in June by the Islamists vowing to introduce an ultra-strict interpretation of Islamic law known as Shariah.

Earlier this week, the regional bloc known as ECOWAS said it had secured Mali's consent to go ahead with plans for a 3,000-soldier military intervention to help take back the troubled north. Among other things, it is also aimed at improving security, though the plan still awaits U.N. Security Council approval.

"You'll all remember what happened in the past when the interim president was assaulted, so those kinds of issues will not occur once we have a standby force in place in Mali," Salamatu Hussaini Suleiman, ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs, said Thursday.

French President Francois Hollande also said this week that he was hopeful for Mali's future.

"I know President Traore will return to his own country and do the indispensable work of reconciliation," Hollande said.

U.S. fears Syria is plotting a massacre

AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - President Bashar al-Assad's forces renewed a ground and aerial bombardment of Aleppo on Friday, extending efforts to crush rebels in Syria's commercial capital in what the United States said it feared could become a massacre.

Insurgents targeted army roadblocks and security installations, with both sides avoiding close-quarters warfare in the city of 2.5 million people, Syria's biggest urban center.

The U.S. State Department said credible reports of tank columns moving on Aleppo, along with air strikes by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, represented a serious escalation of Assad's efforts to crush a rebellion that began 16 months ago.

"This is the concern: that we will see a massacre in Aleppo, and that's what the regime appears to be lining up for," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

Troops stationed on the outskirts of Aleppo unleashed barrages of heavy-caliber mortar rounds on the western neighborhoods of Saladin, al-Sukkari and al-Fardos, while Russian MI-25 helicopter gunships struck al-Sakhour in the east with rockets, several opposition activists in the city said.

RISING CASUALTIES

In the first reported casualty on Friday, a man of about 60 wearing a traditional white prayer outfit was killed near a park in Saladin. His body was placed in a mosque pending identification.

Thirty-four people were killed in Aleppo and its environs on Thursday, according to opposition activists keeping a tally of casualties in the northern city.

"The rebels have so far been nimble, and civilians have mostly been the victims of the bombardment," said activist Abu Mohammad al-Halabi, speaking by phone from the city.

"There is lots of internal displacement, and schools have been turned to makeshift shelters that are packed. One shell hitting a school will result in a catastrophe," he said.

"The regime is massing troops and tanks at the entrances of Aleppo, but it seems it is for now content with bombarding the city, with the rebels constantly on the move."

Majed al-Nour, another activist, said rebels attacked a security outpost in the neighborhood of Bustan al-Joz, which is close to the Aleppo city center, on Thursday.

"The rebels are present in the east and west of the city, and have a foothold in areas of the center. The regime forces control the entrances of Aleppo and the main thoroughfares and commercial streets and are bombarding the residential districts that fell into rebel hands," he said.

Nour said tens of thousands of people had fled Aleppo to nearby northern rural regions close to Turkey from which the Syrian army has withdrawn in recent weeks to focus on urban areas where relatively lightly armed rebels have hunkered down.

UNITING THE OPPOSITION

The heavy fighting around Aleppo follows an audacious bomb attack that killed four of Assad's closest lieutenants in Damascus on July 18 and led some analysts to speculate that the government's grip was slipping.

With U.N. Security Council resolutions for sanctions against Syria vetoed by Russia and China for a third time last week, the United States has said it is stepping up assistance to Syria's fractured opposition, although it remains limited to non-lethal supplies such as communications gear and medical equipment.

One of the most senior figures to defect from Assad's inner circle, Brigadier General Manaf Tlas, put himself forward on Thursday as someone who could help unify the opposition inside and outside Syria on a plan for a transfer of power.

Tlas, speaking in a newspaper interview in the Saudi city of Jeddah, also said he was looking for support from Saudi Arabia and other powers. "I am discussing with ... people outside Syria to reach a consensus with those inside," Tlas told Thursday's edition of the Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat.

Tlas went on to Turkey and met with Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. Turkey, a former ally of Assad and now one of his fiercest critics, has a heavy strategic stake in shaping any post-Assad leadership in neighboring Syria.

Tlas appeared briefly with Davutoglu at an official guest house, but made no statement.

Turkey closed its border posts with Syria on Wednesday to all traffic except Syrian refugees.

Russia, one of the few remaining allies of the authoritarian Assad whose family has run Syria for 42 years, said calls for him to quit power were hindering efforts to end the conflict.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said such calls, led by the United States, Turkey and other Western and Arab nations, were fanning violence. He reiterated Moscow's contention that support for Syrian rebel groups was tantamount to backing terrorism.

Iran promised to stand by Syria, come what may.

First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi told Iran's Press TV on Thursday that the Islamic Republic's support for Syria, its main Arab ally, was "unchangeable", countering suggestions that Iran could soften its backing for Assad.

Griffith University leads search for human evolution

Griffith University researchers will analyse DNA sequences from ancient human remains, some dating back 45,000 years, to determine the origins of the peoples of South-east Asia and Australia.

In collaboration with the Universities of Auckland, Copenhagen and New South Wales, the researchers will analyse human remains from continental and oceanic Asia and Australia using more powerful newly developed ancient DNA sequencing methods.

Chief Investigator Professor David Lambert from the School of Environment says understanding where the earliest people of Asia and continental Australia came from is critical to understanding modern human evolution.

"The recent sequencing of the Australian Aboriginal genome has identified two waves of human migration through Asia,'' he said.

"Aboriginal Australians descended from an early human dispersal into eastern Asia, possibly 62,000 to 75,000 years ago.

"This dispersal is separate from the one that gave rise to modern Asians 25,000 to 38,000 years ago, although there is evidence for hybridisation between them."

The researchers aim to identify descendent individuals from both lineages and detect historic patterns of interbreeding among these early people.

Professor Paul Tacon from Griffith University's Place, Evolution & Rock Art Heritage Unit said the research was a world-first study to attempt to recover human DNA sequences from more than 80 ancient human remains collected from a range of time points.

"We aim to identify the mitochondrial DNA lineage of each sample of human remains, the migration wave they represented and evidence of biological interactions, such as hybridisation with other groups.

"Although complete or draft genomes have been recovered from extinct species such as Neandertals and Woolly Mammoths, there are no existing populations of these species available for comparison.

"But an increasing number of complete human genomes in our study provide the foundation for this work."

Professor Tacon said the study was possible because of recent advances in second-generation DNA sequencing and parallel developments in DNA target capture technologies.

"These developments provide extraordinary new possibilities in the field of ancient human genomics."

The study is part of a $550,000 three-year Australian Research Council Linkage Grant.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Halle Berry suffered a minor head injury during a movie-shoot fight sequence and was treated at a Los Angeles hospital and released.

Berry's Los Angeles publicist Meredith O'Sullivan said the 45-year-old actress suffered the injury Tuesday night on the set of her upcoming movie "The Hive." Berry was taken to a hospital as a precaution and released a short time later.

O'Sullivan said the Oscar-winning actress will continue work on the film.

"The Hive" is a thriller co-starring Abigail Breslin and David Otunga. According to the film database IMDB.com, the plot involves an emergency operator who must confront a killer from her past to save a young girl's life.

FDA Monitors Scientists' Critical Emails

The Food and Drug Administration has been secretly monitoring the emails of its scientists, who had expressed criticism of the agency's review process for approving medical devices. The New York Times reported the FDA captured thousands of private communications involving the scientists and members of Congress, their lawyers and even President Obama. Steve Inskeep talks with Times reporter Scott Shane, who co-reported the story.

The Food and Drug Administration has been secretly monitoring the emails of its own scientists with so-called spy software. The scientists under scrutiny have been criticizing their agency. They disagreed with the agency's review process for approving medical devices. In January, the scientists filed a lawsuit against the FDA when they learned that some of their emails had been intercepted. Now the New York Times is reporting the FDA actually captured thousands of private communications between the scientists and members of Congress, their lawyers, journalists, even the President of the United States. Scott Shane co-reported this story. He's on the line now. Good morning.

SCOTT SHANE: Good morning.

INSKEEP: What got the FDA started on this investigation anyway?

SHANE: Well, they had had some complaints from manufacturers of scanning equipment used in colonoscopies and that kind of thing, who said that in certain articles that were appearing in the press, notably in my newspaper, The New York Times, they thought there was proprietary information that they had provided to the FDA, private corporate secrets, essentially, to their machines. So they set out to find out whether that was true and whether indeed any FDA employees might be leaking proprietary information, either to the press or to other outsiders.

INSKEEP: Okay. So did this become an investigation of the leak of proprietary information, or an investigation of leaks that were embarrassing to companies and the FDA?

SHANE: Well, I think the - it does appear to have begun as a, you know, a legitimate exercise of FDA's right to look at the computers that it owns and that its employers were using to answer this question about proprietary information. But there were some documents that we looked at that were sort of strategy documents for this surveillance operation, that indicated it had gone considerably farther than that. And they included a list of 21 people, about half inside the agency and half outside the agency, who were identified as critics of the agency and they included a member of Congress, several Congressional staff members, a number of journalists.

So it was a sort of enemies list of the agency, and they were projecting, you know, how can we keep an eye on these folks. They weren't actually going inside the computers of journalists and members of Congress, but they were watching for their communications with the FDA employees.

INSKEEP: Did you make the enemies' list, Mr. Shane?

SHANE: I did not, but my colleague, Gardiner Harris - who covered the FDA for several years - was number one on the journalists' list.

INSKEEP: I suppose this is a reminder, and employers do say this to their employees from time to time, if you're at a company computer, and you send out an email or receive one, the company claims the right to look at that, and I guess the FDA as the employer of these scientists claimed that right and used it, as it's entirely legal.

SHANE: That's absolutely right. That part of it is legal, and in fact, the FDA pointed out that when an employee signed on to his or her FDA laptop, there was a sort of warning that flashed up that said this is FDA property and everything is subject to monitoring. But the problem is that there are also laws that protect the privacy of, for example, attorney-client privilege and some of these FDA employees were communicating with their lawyers.

There are laws protecting the privacy of communications - sort of whistle-blowing communications with Congress, with a whistle-blowing office within the government, and those are not supposed to be interfered with. So it seems that there are two interests in conflict, and that perhaps the FDA's operation went a little bit beyond where it really should have gone in terms of just looking for a leak of proprietary information.

INSKEEP: Well, how is the Food and Drug Administration responding to these charges?

SHANE: Well, they were very unhappy with what we were writing. I think they were in shock to some degree, because what happened was a contractor that is only assigned to, kind of, handle documents at the FDA, large quantities of documents...

INSKEEP: Mm-hmm.

SHANE: ...had accidentally put 80,000 pages up on the Web in a place where we were able to find these documents, and others were able to find them as well. So the proprietary information they were trying to protect had actually become public through this mistake of an FDA contractor.

INSKEEP: Awkward. Mr. Shane, thanks very much.

SHANE: Thank you.

New York, Belfast protesters try to save death-row dog

A two-year effort to save Lennox, a death-row dog whose owners say was mistaken for a pitbull, sparked an international protest Saturday in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where the animal is slated to be euthanized next week, according to media reports.

UTV in Belfast reported that protesters had flown in from the U.S., England and Dublin.

Protesters organized by No Kill New York animal-saving group plan to target British and Irish consulates Monday in New York to prevent killing the dog that the Belfast City Council declared had a severe personality disorder but whose owners, the Barnes family, say is a well-handled family pet.

The 7-year-old dog was seized in 2010 as a breed banned under the UK?s Dangerous Dog act.

The dog?s owners say he is an American bulldog-Labrador cross, but dog wardens after measuring his legs and snout declared him a ?possible pitbull type.?

No complaints had been made against the dog, according to media reports.

The Court of Appeal last month rejected a plea spare the dog, being held in a secret location, the Belfast Telegraph reported.?

Protesters say they are trying to raise awareness not only about Lennox but also to show that ?breed specific legislation? is unfair.

Lennox?s plight is documented on a Save Lennox website and on a Facebook page with more than 75,000 fans. Expressions supporting the dog are also posted on Twitter.

The dog?s cause alsois championed by Victoria Stilwell of ?It?s Me or the Dog? on the Animal Planet network.

Stillwell is consulting with the Barnes family and with Belfast officials to stop the euthanizing and allow the dog to be brought to a new home in the United States.

?It is important to understand that every possible legal avenue to release Lennox back to the family has been exhausted, and that result is no longer an option,? Stillwell posted on her website. ?Indeed, the latest news is that he is scheduled to be euthanized next week. My heart goes out to Craig, Caroline and Brooke [Barnes] for what they are enduring.?

Stillwell has yet to hear back about her efforts, she wrote.

The Barnes family, in a?statement posted on Facebook and the Save Lennox website,??wrote, ?the fight to spare Lennox?s life may well be over. It has been almost impossible for us to accept that we have to admit defeat.?

Double amputee Oscar Pistorius will race in the London Olympic games

Four years ago, double amputee Oscar Pistorius -- aka the Blade Runner -- was battling bureaucracy (and his own ability) for the chance to compete in the Beijing Olympics. He might not have made the cut for China, but this time around he's secured his ticket to London. The South African athlete was already penned in for the 4 x 400 meters relay, and will now also compete in the singles 400 meters -- said to be his favorite distance. The South African Olympic committee made a last-minute decision to include Pistorius in the team, making him the first amputee track athlete to compete in the full Olympic games. An amazing achievement in its own right, but a race victory on top of the bureaucratic one would surely be the ultimate finish.

US jobs outlook: Better, still not good enough

The last piece of the puzzle in this month's economic data is expected to confirm what the others have shown so far: the U.S. job machine is sputtering along at a pace that isn't putting American back to work fast enough.

Friday?s jobs report is projected to show a modest pickup in growth from last month?s dismal report, which showed the jobless rate inching upward again. Forecasters are looking for job growth of about 125,000 in June, almost twice the pace of growth in May, when a paltry 6,900 new jobs were added. But that would still badly lag monthly gains of over 250,000 seen at the start of the year.

If job growth for June comes in as expected, that could be enough to nudge the unemployment rate back down to 8.1 percent, from 8.2 percent in May, according to Paul Dales, an economist at Capital Economics.

?But without a major acceleration in GDP growth, the unemployment rate is unlikely to fall significantly further,? he said.

That pickup in economic growth appears unlikely, at least in the short term.

As Europe?s economy?weakened and China?s once-robust growth?cooled, the U.S. economy expanded by 1.9 percent in the first quarter, which was a sharp slowdown from the 3 percent annual pace posted in the final three months of last year.

Most of that growth came from auto production, as consumers replaced worn-out cars with newer, more efficient models. Excluding autos, first quarter GDP grew by just 0.7 percent.

"Given that domestic growth is being generated by the autos sector, as we go into the second quarter, a pretty soft outcome looks likely," said Jeremy Lawson, a senior economist at BNP Paribas in New York.

Auto sales, which rose strongly in June after a weak showing the prior month, won't generate enough growth to power the economy without?an expanding manufacturing sector and rising consumer spending.

A widely watched survey of the nation's purchasing managers reported Monday that the manufacturing sector shrank for the first time in three years in June.

Some economists had hoped to see a pickup in consumer spending following a sharp drop in gasoline prices this spring. The average cost of a gallon of gasoline has fallen roughly 15 percent since April.

But consumer spending, as reported by the government, was flat in May for the first time in six months amid?tepid demand for motor vehicles. Major retailers reported lower sales figures in April and in May.

"We're seeing consumer spending come off the boil a bit over the last few months. That's to be expected, given uncertainty across the board and the troubling headlines we've seen," said Omer Esiner, chief analyst at Commonwealth Foreign Exchange in Washington.

The global economic slowdown has also cut into demand for American products overseas. Though the U.S. economy is less reliant on exports than its trading competitors, weak global demand hurt corporate profits in the first quarter. After-tax corporate profits fell by 5.7 percent in the first quarter ? the first drop since the fourth quarter of 2008.

"It highlights that the U.S. is not immune from the weakness in the rest of the world. Corporate profits are likely to remain under pressure, a development that is unlikely to help the employment outlook," said Lawson.

There have been some rays of hope recently in the bottoming of the U.S. housing market, where both prices and sales volumes have begun to stage something of a comeback. That could bring some new jobs to the construction and real estate industries, both hard hit by the housing collapse. But the pace of home sales and construction is still far below levels expected three years after the end of a recession.

On Thursday, the Labor Department reported that new claims for jobless benefits dropped by 14,000 to a seasonally adjusted 374,000. And?payrolls processor ADP released a report showing that private businesses added a higher-than-expected 176,000 jobs in June.???

Though economists expect the weak recovery to continue this year, consumers are getting gloomier about their own outlook. For the fourth month in a row, consumer confidence fell in June.?The Conference Board?s labor index fell to the lowest level since January.

?Consumer confidence is digging deeper into recession territory as many Americans see their job prospects dim, their household net worth take a beating, and the European debt crises send jitters through the equity markets,? said IHS Global Insight economist Yinbin Li.

"I'm short the euro," says Jim Iuorio, Director; TJM Institutional Services, discussing the ECB's rate-cut decision, and weighing in on how U.S. jobs numbers will impact the markets.

Some 16 percent of survey respondents expect business conditions will be worse six months from now.

That kind of pessimism takes a toll on hiring, especially among small business owners, according to Martin Mucci, CEO of Paychex, which manages company payrolls.

?Consumer confidence is a big issue,? he said. ?Whether you want to open that next small business or additional location, when consumer confidence is flat you're not sure if somebody will buy your product. That keeps people a little bit hesitant to open up that new business."?

Major retailers such as Macy's, Costco, Kohl's and Target reported disappointing sales in June, as worries about the economy and high unemployment took their toll on consumer sentiment. But off-price chains had a better showing as shoppers looked for bargains.
