How Do We Find Love? Try These Relationship Tips | 106.7 WTLC

Relationships are a tricky thing whether you are trying to find one or trying to make one work. Nevertheless, we all want one so how do we find Love?

Today dating has gone beyond bars for finding a soulmate. However, if you are still into dating with drinks why not get right down to business. Speed Dating gives a whole new meaning to ?first impressions are everything? and can be found in just about every city across America. Supposedly, you can tell within the first five minutes if you want to get to know someone better or show them the door. However, this high speed approach to traditional dating is not for everyone.

The Internet is the matchmaker of the new age. We have all seen the commercials promising long lasting love through matching profiles. Though it used to be frowned upon to tell your friends you met someone online, it is becoming increasingly common. So much so that there have been major motion pictures surrounding the concept (i.e. Must Love Dogs and You?ve Got Mail). Be very careful though, as mother always said, ?You can?t believe everything you read.?

When looking for love sometimes it doesn?t hurt to stay close to home. Your friends and family often know you better than you know yourself, or so they so often claim. Why not give them the opportunity to show you just what you might need? The dreaded blind date is always an option.

Regardless where you are looking or how, everyone deserves to find love. Try stepping outside your comfort zone. Why not give each one of these methods a shot and you just might find Mr. or Mrs. Right during one of those five minutes, IM or emails or on that blind date.

Romney: Time to leave disappointments behind

(AP) ? Mitt Romney's mission in this election: connect with Americans on a personal level.

He sought to do so Thursday by appealing to feelings of anxiety ? if not disappointment ? that's rippling through the electorate as the nation faces stubbornly high unemployment and fears about its future place in the world.

"Hope and change had a powerful appeal. But tonight I'd ask a simple question: If you felt that excitement when you voted for Barack Obama, shouldn't you feel that way now that he's President Obama?" Romney will say as he formally accepts the Republican presidential nomination Thursday night, according to prepared remarks. "You know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had, was the day you voted for him."

Aides said the speech was the most important of Romney's political career and will forever change his family's legacy. In winning his party's presidential nomination, the former Massachusetts governor has succeeded where his father failed a generation ago. But facing a two-month sprint to an Election Day matchup against President Barack Obama, Romney is now trying to broaden his appeal and connect with women and with middle-of-the road voters who will ultimately decide his fate.

To do so, he is trying to strike a soft tone laced with deeply personal themes. He will draw from his Mormon faith and the influence of his mother and father ? both dead for more than a decade ?when he faces the Republican National Convention and a prime-time audience.

"My mom and dad gave their kids the greatest gift of all ? the gift of unconditional love. They cared deeply about who we would be, and much less about what we would do," Romney will say, according to prepared remarks released by the campaign.

George Romney, a Michigan governor, ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 1968 when Romney was a young man. His mother, Lenore, ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in Michigan in 1970.

"My mom and dad were true partners, a life lesson that shaped me by everyday example. When my mom ran for the Senate, my dad was there for her every step of the way," Romney said.

The remarks will be delivered on a stage that puts him a little bit closer to the crowd inside the convention hall. His campaign hopes the evening ends with Americans feeling a little bit closer to the Republican presidential candidate, too.

On this night, they are telling Romney's story

The entire evening ? from the physical staging to the speakers' program to the planned whole-family entrance after Romney's big speech ? is aimed at introducing the sometimes stiff and distant politician as a businessman, Olympic savior and deeply religious family man. His pitch to his party, as well as to the many undecided voters who are disappointed in the country's direction, will be that he's the candidate better able to shoulder the country's economic burdens.

"To the majority of Americans who now believe that the future will not be better than the past, I can guarantee you this: If Barack Obama is re-elected, you will be right," Romney will say.

Romney's speech is the centerpiece of the evening, and will touch on themes that are both personal and political. He'll tell stories, aides say, that haven't been part of his campaign trail pitch. He'll discuss his Mormon faith, particularly his time helping struggling families when he served as a church leader in Boston.

"Like a lot of families in a new place with no family, we found kinship with a wide circle of friends through our church," he will say. "We prayed together, our kids played together and we always stood ready to help each other out in different ways."

To prepare for the big night, Romney has spent months making meticulous notes about his experiences campaigning. He's read numerous previous convention speeches and talked to a number of close friends and confidants about how to approach his address. He and his wife, Ann, spent part of last weekend rehearsing their speeches in an auditorium at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., near the family's lakeside summer home.

When the big moment comes, he'll be standing in the Tampa Bay Times Forum on a stage that organizers rebuilt overnight. They replaced what had been a standard stage at the front of the hall with a section that pushes the podium toward the center of the floor, so Romney will physically stand among the crowd as he speaks.

"It brings him a little bit closer," campaign manager Matt Rhoades said of the new arrangement.

Before Romney speaks, a parade of people from his past will take to the podium to walk through different phases of his life: his time running the private equity firm Bain Capital, his years running the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and his experiences as governor of Massachusetts. Referred to inside the campaign as "character witnesses," the speeches are designed to showcase the man who friends say inspires fierce loyalty. Much of the list was drawn up by Romney's son Tagg, who found acquaintances from their Mormon church in Massachusetts to talk about how his father helped them get by.

Among those set to address the crowd are Bob White, a longtime friend and colleague from Bain Capital, and Tom Stemberg, the founder of Staples, the office supply store; Olympic speed skater Derek Parra and hockey player Mike Eruzione; and former Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, who is still a closer adviser.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Eastern time, organizers will run a film showcasing Romney's life. A handful of young video staffers have spent weeks working 16-hour days inside a suite at the Marriott hotel where Romney is now staying, editing the piece through the wee hours of the morning.

Then, it will be Romney's turn. When the speech is over, he'll walk back up the stage to where his entire family ? wife, five sons and their wives, and 15 of his 18 grandchildren ? will be waiting. Thousands of balloons nestled in netting high above the convention floor will drop, carefully positioned so that none fall on the family.

It will create the image his campaign is looking for. At that Marriott hotel the morning of the speech, Rhoades saw a copy of Thursday's Tampa Bay Times, where, on the front page, running mate Paul Ryan and his family are pictured waving after his Wednesday night address, the vice presidential nominee's arm wrapped around the waist of his wife, Janna.

Rhoades pointed at the photo.

"We need that," he said.

Moving toward regeneration

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? The skin, the blood, and the lining of the gut -- adult stem cells replenish them daily. But stem cells really show off their healing powers in planarians, humble flatworms fabled for their ability to rebuild any missing body part. Just how adult stem cells build the right tissues at the right times and places has remained largely unanswered.

Now, in a study published in an upcoming issue of Development, researchers at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research describe a novel system that allowed them to track stem cells in the flatworm Schmidtea mediterranea. The team found that the worms' stem cells, known as neoblasts, march out, multiply, and start rebuilding tissues lost to amputation.

"We were able to demonstrate that fully potent stem cells can mobilize when tissues undergo structural damage," says Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Stowers Investigator Alejandro S?nchez Alvarado, Ph.D., who led the study. "And these processes are probably happening to both you and me as we speak, but are very difficult to visualize in organisms like us."

Stem cells hold the potential to provide an unlimited source of specialized cells for regenerative therapy of a wide variety of diseases but delivering human stem cell therapies to the right location in the body remains a major challenge. The ability to follow individual neoblasts opens the door to uncovering the molecular cues that help planarian stem cells navigate to the site of injury and ultimately may allow scientists to provide therapeutic stem cells with guideposts to their correct destination.

"Human counterparts exist for most of the genes that we have found to regulate the activities of planarian stem cells," says S?nchez Alvarado. "But human beings have these confounding levels of complexity. Planarians are much simpler making them ideal model systems to study regeneration."

Scientists had first hypothesized in the late 1800s that planarian stem cells, which normally gather near the worms' midlines, can travel toward wounds. The past century produced evidence both for and against the idea. S?nchez Alvarado, armed with modern tools, decided to revisit the question.

For the new study, first author Otto C. Guedelhoefer, IV, Ph.D., a former graduate student in S?nchez Alvarado's lab, exposed S. mediterranea to radiation, which killed the worms' neoblasts while leaving other types of cells unharmed. The irradiated worms would wither and die within weeks unless Guedelhoefer transplanted some stem cells from another worm. The graft's stem cells sensed the presence of a wound -- the transplant site -- migrated out of the graft, reproduced and rescued their host. Unlike adult stem cells in humans and other mammals, planarian stem cells remain pluripotent in fully mature animals and remain so even as they migrate.

But when Guedelhoefer irradiated only a part of the worm's body, the surviving stem cells could not sense the injury and did not mobilize to fix the damage, which showed that the stem cells normally stay in place. Only when a fair amount of irradiated tissue died did the stem cells migrate to the injured site and start to rebuild. Next, Guedelhoefer irradiated a worm's body part and cut it with a blade. The surviving stem cells arrived at the scene within days.

To perform the experiments, Guedelhoefer adapted worm surgery and x-ray methods created sixty to ninety years ago. "Going back to the old literature was essential and saved me tons of time," says Guedelhoefer, currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was able to reproduce and quantify results obtained in 1949 by F. Dubois, a French scientist, who first developed the techniques for partially irradiating planarians with x-rays.

But Guedelhoefer went further. He pinpointed the locations of stem cells and studied how far they dispersed using RNA whole-mount in situ hybridization (WISH), specifically adapted to planarians in S?nchez Alvarado's lab. Using WISH, he observed both original stem cells and their progeny by tagging specific pieces of mRNA . The technique allowed him to determine that pluripotent stem cells can travel and produce different types of progeny at the same time.

"In other systems, most migrating stem cell progeny are not pluripotent," says Guedelhoefer. "For the most part, blood stem cells in humans stay in the bone marrow but their progeny leave and turn into a few other cell types." But in planarians, it looks like those two things are completely separate. Stem cells can move and maintain the full potential to turn into other types of cells."

Next, S?nchez Alvarado looks forward to implementing genetic screens and transplantation experiments to disrupt or enhance the cellular behaviors the team observed, to figure out the "rules of engagement" for stem cell migration, he says.

"Why can some animals regenerate whole body parts but you and I are not good at it?" says S?nchez Alvarado. "Can we write an extra rule or erase one? Is it possible, for instance, to get rid of cancer while gaining regenerative properties? These are questions we'd love to have answers to."

The Stowers Institute for Medical Research, a National Institutes of Health Training Grant (5T32 HD0791), a National Institutes of Health Grant (GM057260), and Howard Hughes Medical Institute provided funding for this work.

Is it Time to Develop a Membership Program? - Enlightened Marketing

membership site, passive recurring revenue

Judi writes: I would LOVE to know how to develop membership sites.

Smart lady! Let me start you out right. A membership SITE can be a lot of work. But, if you do it properly, a membership PROGRAM can help you ?

  • Build your brand (what you?re known for)
  • Attract clients and
  • Stabilize peaks and valleys in your revenues

At least that?s what ours have done for us. Let me share with you how we do it:

1. Membership programs build your brand.

Like a signature product, your membership program contains a big, clear promise: ?if you, the audience, have this issue or challenge, my program will deliver you these benefits and this outcome.?

That promise teaches your audience what your brand stands for. Members who experience the benefits of your program begin to know and trust you. Actually, even those who DON?T purchase will associate the promised benefits with you. Over time you get known as a business that delivers certain solutions to your clients.

Our very first membership program, Attracting Perfect Clients, has been a huge boost to our brand and getting known for, well, helping solopreneurs attract perfect clients.

2. Membership programs attract clients.

Sure, this isn?t the main reason you want a membership program. If you?re like most solopreneurs or small businesses, you want a way to serve more people, help those who may not be ready to invest in one-on-one services and generate passive revenue.

An unexpected side benefit, though, is that you get known as an expert in that area (see #1 above), and prospective clients seek you. What has happened for me is that people go through the whole program, love it, and contact me for personalized help. These clients are invariably a better fit than those who are strangers to your brand.

3. Membership programs stabilize peaks and valleys in your revenues.

Although you can set up your program to sell for a one-time payment, as we have done with a few of our programs, a big benefit this ignores is recurring revenue. Passive recurring revenue is just about as good as it gets, and creating a high-quality membership program will get it for you.

Peaks and valleys often occur because you get a lot of client work (yay, money!) but find yourself too busy for marketing. By the time your schedule opens up ? yikes! ? you suddenly need clients and your revenues plummet. Having a membership site means you make a sale once and delighted members stay with you month after month, smoothing out the valleys.

I?ve said many times that each of our membership programs brings in between a car payment and a house payment each month. That?s pretty good for work I completed two years ago.

What? You haven?t updated the site in two years?

Nope! ;) ?That?s because I followed a really unique model for a membership program that provides recurring revenue AND freedom.

Why not a traditional membership site? While I enjoy teaching programs and I especially love working with Enlightened Marketing clients, I wanted to create passive revenue to sustain my business.

How exactly can you develop a membership program like mine? I?ll give you a quick answer and a resource.

  • Choose a hot topic your audience is dying to learn more about and that you LOVE to teach
  • Create your first lesson
  • Put up a program page where people can learn more about it and purchase it online
  • Send traffic to the program page, then ?
  • When you get your first customer, start making more lessons!

Get Passive Revenue The Simple Way

If it seems too easy, let me assure you: there?s work involved. However, it IS simple. You don?t need a lot of tech knowledge, fancy software or days of time spent each month to moderate forums and create new content. Once your lessons are done, YOU?RE done.

If you?re still reading this, I want to share a resource with you: Get Passive Revenue? The Simple Way! is a free webinar I did with my colleague, Andy Riegler Andrews, detailing how to get started EXACTLY as I did back in 2009. If this article fired you up like this idea did for me back then, you simply must check out the webinar.

NY gunman quiet loner, victim outgoing family man

NEW YORK (AP) ? A gunman who killed a former co-worker in cold blood in the shadow of the Empire State Building and then was shot dead by police after he turned his gun on them spent long hours in the quiet of Central Park, photographing hawks and marveling over nature's beauty.

His victim was a gregarious salesman, beloved by his nieces and nephews as the fun uncle who could talk with equal expertise about the New York Jets and the women's fashion accessories he sold.

Investigators on Saturday were trying to piece together what caused Jeffrey Johnson, a T-shirt designer, to ambush Steve Ercolino, an apparel company vice president, a day earlier outside the Manhattan offices of the company where they once were colleagues.

Police said Johnson hid behind a car and then killed Ercolino with five gunshots as he arrived for work. Johnson then was shot by two police officers who confronted him on a busy sidewalk.

Security camera footage showed the officers had only an instant to react when Johnson suddenly turned as they approached and pointed his gun at them, his arm cocked as if to fire.

Their encounter was over in eight seconds. The officers, who had been standing nearly close enough to shake hands with Johnson and had no opportunity to take cover, fired almost immediately.

Nine bystanders were wounded in the 16-shot volley, likely by stray or ricocheting police bullets. None of their injuries was life-threatening, police said.

Police investigating Johnson's killing of Ercolino were eyeing bad blood between them from when they worked together at Hazan Import, a garment district business where Ercolino was a vice president of sales.

Johnson and Ercolino had traded harassment accusations when they worked together, police said, and when Johnson was laid off from the company a year ago he blamed Ercolino, saying he hadn't aggressively marketed his new T-shirt line.

After Johnson's layoff, neighbors said, he continued to leave his apartment every day in a suit.

Internet records listed Johnson as the administrator of the website for a business called St. Jolly's Art, which sold iron-on graphic art for T-shirts. Art for sale on the site included stylized drawings of fighter planes and muscle cars and whimsical "seafaring vignettes" featuring pirate maidens and tall ships.

Johnson also was part of a community of bird watchers and photographers who document hawks and other wildlife living in Central Park, a few blocks from his home.

In one email to another bird watcher who works at The Associated Press, Johnson wrote tenderly about spending a winter night watching ducks in the park.

"Near midnight by the Harlem Meer I watched a little 'flotilla' of Mallards swimming and softly honking ... fifteen degree temp and they were carrying on unfazed. Just remarkable," he wrote.

His photographs of Central Park's hawk population appeared regularly on blogs tracking the birds.

A neighbor who often saw Johnson, 58, said he was always alone.

"I always felt bad," said Gisela Casella, who lived a few floors above Johnson in a modest apartment building on the Upper East Side. "I said, 'Doesn't he have a girlfriend?' I never saw him with anybody."

Ercolino, 41, was described by his relatives as the opposite of a quiet loner.

His eldest brother, Paul Ercolino, said he was a gregarious salesman who often traveled, had a loving girlfriend and was the life of any family gathering.

"He was in the prime of his life," he said. "He would do anything for anybody at any time. ... He was so wonderful with my children. At Christmastime, he was the one who always had the best presents for the kids."

Paul Ercolino said his brother, known to nieces and nephews as Uncle Ducky because of his nearly blond hair, had followed his father into the garment industry after growing up in Nanuet, just north of New York City, then later worked in women's handbags and accessories. He said his brother had never mentioned to the family that he had any problems with a co-worker.

Hazan Import Corp. executives didn't return phone calls seeking comment Friday.

Johnson, after waiting for Steve Ercolino to come to work, walked up to him, pulled out a .45-caliber pistol and fired at his head, police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. After Ercolino fell to the ground, Johnson stood over him and shot four more times, a witness told investigators.

"Jeffrey just came from behind two cars, pulled out his gun, put it up to Steve's head and shot him," said Carol Timan, whose daughter, Irene Timan, was walking to Hazan Imports at the time with Ercolino.

In security camera footage released by the police, Johnson can be seen walking calmly down the sidewalk after the shooting, distancing himself slightly from the other pedestrians, who appear to have no awareness that anything is wrong.

But when two police officers approach in a hurry, Johnson turns and pulls a handgun from a bag. Then, the scene explodes into action. People seated on a bench behind the gunman and pedestrians standing close to the two officers run for their lives.

Only a young child seems not to react, strolling out of view of the camera as adults all around leap away in terror.

Startled New Yorkers later looked up from their morning routines in the crowded business district to see people sprawled in the streets bleeding and a tarp covering a body in front of the tourist landmark.

"I was on the bus, and people were yelling 'Get down! Get down!" accountant Marc Engel said. "I was thinking, 'You people are crazy. No one is shooting in the middle of midtown Manhattan at 9 o'clock in the morning.'"

It was over in seconds, he said ? "a lot of pop, pop, pop, pop, one shot after the other."

Afterward, he saw sidewalks littered with the wounded, including one man "dripping enough blood to leave a stream."

The officers who fired were part a detail regularly assigned to patrol landmarks such as the 1,454-foot-tall skyscraper since the Sept. 11 terror attacks, officials said.

Kelly, the police commissioner, said the officers who confronted Johnson had "a gun right in their face" and "responded quickly, and they responded appropriately."

"These officers, having looked at the tape myself, had absolutely no choice," he said.

A witness had told police that Johnson fired at the officers, but authorities say ballistics evidence doesn't support that. Johnson's gun held seven rounds, they said. He fired five times at Ercolino, one round was still in the gun and one was ejected when officers secured it, authorities said.

A loaded magazine was found in Johnson's briefcase.

Johnson legally bought the gun in Sarasota, Fla., in 1991, but he didn't have a permit to possess it in New York City, authorities said.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said New York still is the safest big city in the country, on pace to have a record low number of murders this year.

"But we are not immune to the national problem of gun violence," he said of the shooting, following mass shootings at a Colorado movie theater and a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

The nine people wounded outside the Empire State Building were all from New York City, except for a woman from Chapel Hill, N.C. They suffered graze wounds or other minor injuries.

Metal detectors and bag searchers have been standard at the Empire State Building since 1997, when a gunman opened fire on the 86th-floor observation deck, killing one tourist and wounding six others before fatally shooting himself.

The skyscraper remained open Friday throughout the mayhem, although its workers became witnesses.

"We were just working here and we just heard bang, bang, bang!" said Mohammed Bachchu, a worker at a nearby souvenir shop.

He said he rushed from the building and saw seven people lying on the ground, covered in blood.

Rebecca Fox said she saw people running down the street and initially thought it was a celebrity sighting, but then she saw a woman shot in the foot and a man dead on the ground.

"I was scared and shocked and literally shaking," she said. "It was like 'CSI,' but it was real."

Ingredients You Never Want to See on Your Nutrition Label ...

The year was 1950, and The Magic 8-Ball had just arrived in stores. It looked like a toy, but it wasn?t. It was a future-telling device, powered by the unknown superpowers that lived inside its cheap plastic shell. Despite a bit of an attitude??Don?t count on it,? ?My reply is no??it was a huge success. Americans, apparently, want to see their futures.

A few decades later, Congress passed the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act that, among other things, turned the 45,000 food products in the average supermarket into fortune-telling devices. Americans inexplicably yawned. I?m trying to change that. Why? The nutrition label can predict the future size of your pants and health care bills.

Unfortunately, these labels aren?t as clear and direct as the Magic 8-Ball. Consider the list of ingredients: The Food and Drug Administration has approved more than 3,000 additives, most of which you?ve never heard of. But the truth is, you don?t have to know them all. You just need to be able to parse out the bad stuff. Do that and you?ll have a pretty good idea how your future will shape up?whether you?ll end up overweight and unhealthy or turn out to be fit, happy, and energized.

While researching the new Eat This, Not That! 2013: The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution, I identified 8 ingredients you never want to see on the nutrition label. Should you put down products that contain them? As the Magic 8-Ball would say: Signs point to yes.

BHA

This preservative is used to prevent rancidity in foods that contain oils. Unfortunately, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) has been shown to cause cancer in rats, mice, and hamsters. The reason the FDA hasn?t banned it is largely technical?the cancers all occurred in the rodents? forestomachs, an organ that humans don?t have. Nevertheless, the study, published in the Japanese Journal of Cancer Research, concluded that BHA was ?reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen,? and as far as I?m concerned, that?s reason enough to eliminate it from your diet.

You?ll find it in: Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles

Parabens

These synthetic preservatives are used to inhibit mold and yeast in food. The problem is parabens may also disrupt your body?s hormonal balance. A study in Food Chemical Toxicology found that daily ingestion decreased sperm and testosterone production in rats, and parabens have been found present in breast cancer tissues.

You?ll find it in: Baskin-Robbins sundaes

Partially Hydrogenated Oil

?I?ve harped on this before, but it bears repeating: Don?t confuse ?0 g trans fat? with being trans fat-free. The FDA allows products to claim zero grams of trans fat as long as they have less than half a gram per serving. That means they can have 0.49 grams per serving and still be labeled a no-trans-fat food. Considering that two grams is the absolute most you ought to consume in a day, those fractions can quickly add up. The telltale sign that your snack is soiled with the stuff? Look for partially hydrogenated oil on the ingredient statement. If it?s anywhere on there, then you?re ingesting artery-clogging trans fat.

You?ll find it in: Long John Silver?s Popcorn Shrimp, Celeste frozen pizzas

FIGHT FAT WITH FAT! Some fats, like trans fat, will pad you with extra pounds, but other types can help you shed unwanted weight. See for yourself?pick up these 5 Fatty Foods that Make You Skinny today!

Sodium Nitrite

Nitrites and nitrates are used to inhibit botulism-causing bacteria and to maintain processed meats? pink hues, which is why the FDA allows their use. Unfortunately, once ingested, nitrite can fuse with amino acids (of which meat is a prime source) to form nitrosamines, powerful carcinogenic compounds. Ascorbic and erythorbic acids?essentially vitamin C?have been shown to decrease the risk, and most manufacturers now add one or both to their products, which has helped. Still, the best way to reduce risk is to limit your intake.

You?ll find it in: Oscar Mayer hot dogs, Hormel bacon

Caramel Coloring

This additive wouldn?t be dangerous if you made it the old-fashioned way?with water and sugar, on top of a stove. But the food industry follows a different recipe: They treat sugar with ammonia, which can produce some nasty carcinogens. How carcinogenic are these compounds? A Center for Science in the Public Interest report asserted that the high levels of caramel color found in soda account for roughly 15,000 cancers in the U.S. annually. Another good reason to scrap soft drinks? They?re among The 20 Worst Drinks in America.

You?ll find it in: Coke/Diet Coke, Pepsi/Diet Pepsi

Castoreum

Castoreum is one of the many nebulous ?natural ingredients? used to flavor food. Though it isn?t harmful, it is unsettling. Castoreum is a substance made from beavers? castor sacs, or anal scent glands. These glands produce potent secretions that help the animals mark their territory in the wild. In the food industry, however, 1,000 pounds of the unsavory ingredient are used annually to imbue foods?usually vanilla or raspberry flavored?with a distinctive, musky flavor.

You?ll find it in: Potentially any food containing ?natural ingredients?

Food Dyes

Plenty of fruit-flavored candies and sugary cereals don?t contain a single gram of produce, but instead rely on artificial dyes and flavorings to suggest a relationship with nature. Not only do these dyes allow manufacturers to mask the drab colors of heavily processed foods, but certain hues have been linked to more serious ailments. A Journal of Pediatrics study linked Yellow 5 to hyperactivity in children, Canadian researchers found Yellow 6 and Red 40 to be contaminated with known carcinogens, and Red 3 is known to cause tumors. The bottom line? Avoid artificial dyes as much as possible.

You?ll find it in: Lucky Charms, Skittles, Jell-O

THE DOMINO EFFECT: Sugar doesn?t just come in the form of cookies and candy. Discover the insidious ways it can creep into your diet with 9 Sneaky Sources of Sugar.

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein

Hydrolyzed vegetable protein, used as a flavor enhancer, is plant protein that has been chemically broken down into amino acids. One of these acids, glutamic acid, can release free glutamate. When this glutamate joins with free sodium in your body, they form monosodium glutamate (MSG), an additive known to cause adverse reactions?headaches, nausea, and weakness, among others?in sensitive individuals. When MSG is added to products directly, the FDA requires manufacturers to disclose its inclusion on the ingredient statement. But when it occurs as a byproduct of hydrolyzed protein, the FDA allows it to go unrecognized.

Ken Shamrock accidentally scores a knockout

Former UFC champ Ken Shamrock is nicknamed the "World's Most Dangerous Man," and he proved this title while in a mall in California. TMZ reports Shamrock reportedly hit a woman while trying to break up a fight.

While sitting at a mall in Modesto, Calif., he saw two women involved in a fight. He jumped in to try to separate them, when another person jumped on his back. He threw the back-jumper to the ground and threw a knockout punch, earning his first knockout since 2004.

It wasn't until she was out that Shamrock and the crowd yelled at him that he saw he had knocked out a woman. Though a report was taken, the police told TMZ they most likely won't press charges because Shamrock was acting in self-defense.

Shamrock's rep notes, "Outside the ring, Ken is not a violent man ... and was only trying to do the right thing."

Inside the ring, Shamrock's last fight was in November of 2010. He lost in a TKO due to leg injury. His last UFC fight was a 2006 loss to Tito Ortiz, an ending to their longstanding rivalry. Shamrock's career spanned 17 years and included wins in PRIDE, Pancrase and the UFC.

Apple v. Samsung jury finds Apple's patents valid, awards it more than $1.05 billion in damages

The federal court jury in the patent infringement lawsuit between Apple and Samsung has presented its verdict after deliberating for just for 21 hours and 37 minutes following the three week trial. This particular case started with Apple's lawsuit last April and now the jury's decision is that Samsung did infringe on Apple's '381 bounceback patent with all 21 of its products in question. For the '915 patent on pinch-and-zoom, the jury ruled all but three of the devices listed infringed, and more damningly, found that Samsung executives either knew or should have known their products infringed on the listed patents. The jury has also found against Samsung when it comes to Apple's contours on the back of the iPhone and its home screen GUI. The Galaxy Tab, was found not to have infringed upon Apple's iPad design patents. The bad news for Samsung continued however, as the jury decided that not only did it willfully infringe on five of the seven Apple patents, but also upheld their validity when it came to utility, design and trade dress.

The amount of the damages against Samsung is in: $1,051,855,000.00. That's less than half of the $2.5 billion it was seeking, but still more than enough to put an exclamation point on this victory for the team from Cupertino. The jury also ruled that Apple did not infringe upon Samsung's patents with the iPhone 3G and 3GS, and has awarded it zero dollars in damages. We'll have more information for you as it become available.

Overcoming Fear of Commitment

Two months before walking down the aisle the fear hit. What if I?m making the wrong decision? What if God has someone else for me to marry and I misunderstood? What if I wake up the day after the wedding and think I?ve made a big mistake? Have you ever played the ?what if? game? If so, you know it?s a losing battle. Many of us have wrestled with fear of commitment; especially when it comes to a serious life-long commitment like marriage. So, what do we do with that fear?

In order to overcome the fear it?s helpful to get to the root of the issue. There we find that fear is either caused by a legitimate reason that needs to be addressed or it?s something that is simply a ?what if? question that cannot be answered and that needs to be released.

Red flag warning.
A red flag weather warning means there is a potential disaster headed your way and you need to pay attention. The same is true in relationships. If you find that your fear of commitment is caused by a legitimate red flag, this is a warning of a potential future crisis that should be taken seriously now. Every red flag needs to be genuinely addressed by both people before marriage, with counseling often being helpful and necessary. What are some legitimate flags? There are many but here are a few:

  • Fear that your fiance will cheat when you?re married because he has cheated while you are dating
  • Fear of serious financial issues because your fiance is in major debt and lacks wise spending habits
  • Fear of major clashes in daily life or while raising children due to your fiance having a different faith

When to tell the ?What ifs? to get lost!
If there are no genuine red flags, and you yourself are confident that you are ready to be married, then it is likely that the fear of commitment is due to those pesky ?what ifs? that most everyone feels at one point or another; those questions that really can?t be answered ahead of time. For example, What if we stop being attracted to each other? What if we grow apart? What if one day I don?t think I love him anymore? What if?? Here are some things that can help you know when to happily make a commitment despite a few ?what if? fears:

  • No red flags in your own or your fiance?s character or in your relationship.
  • You are both emotionally, spiritually and financially healthy.
  • There are godly people who know you and your fianc? well, and affirm that you are well-matched.
  • Pre-marriage counseling and communication with your fiance has revealed that you are well-suited regarding thoughts on faith, living daily life, where to live, how to raise kids, how much involvement you will have with each other?s families, views on money, etc.

Go with your gut.
Several weeks before my wedding when I expressed to several friends my fears of getting married, most of them said, ?Don?t worry, it?s completely normal to feel that way.? One friend, however, freaked me out when she said, ?I never had one doubt about marrying my husband so if you have even the tiniest doubt or fear I suggest postponing the wedding.? This is good advice when there is a genuine red flag however when your fear falls under the general ?what if? category, I would suggest that the fear is something that should simply be released.

After much introspection pre-wedding, I realized once again that there were no red flags in my relationship with my fianc?. I felt confident that I loved him and I was genuinely ready to be married to him. Two years post-wedding I can say that other than following Jesus, marrying my husband is the smartest, best and happiest decision I have ever made; and all of those ?what ifs? that hounded me before are permanently gone.

West Nile Outbreak Reaches 1,100 Cases in US

The United States is experiencing one of the biggest outbreaks of West Nile virus in history, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As of Tuesday, 1,118 cases of the mosquito-borne disease had been reported. That's the highest number ever reported at this point in the year since the disease was first detected in the U.S. in 1999. If cases continue to grow at this pace, the West Nile outbreak could be the largest ever in the United States, said Dr. Lyle Petersen, director of the CDC's Division of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases.

So far, 41 people have died from West Nile infections.

About 630 people have developed the rare neuroinvasive form of the disease, which affects the nervous system. The other cases involved what doctors call West Nile fever, a condition that can cause fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting.

Texas, the state hit hardest by the outbreak, has reported 537 cases of West Nile, close to 300 of which have been the neuroinvasive form. In some parts of the state, officials have begun aerial pesticide spraying to curb the spread of the disease.

Most people infected with the West Nile virus show no symptoms; from the number of neuroinvasive cases that have occurred, it can be estimated that more than 94,000 people in the United States have been infected with West Nile this year. It's likely that about 98 percent of cases of West Nile fever are not reported, the CDC says.

These unreported cases still take a toll on the nation's health and economy, as people who may not know that West Nile is the cause of their illness take time off from work or use health care resources, said William Schaffner, chairman of the department of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University.

"The problem is even larger? than the already notably larger problem of neuroinvasive disease,"Schaffner said. The impact of unreported cases is a factor in the decision to call the current West Nile outbreak an emergency, as Dallas did, Schaffner said.

The reason for the large outbreak this year is not clear, but it could be related to this season's especially hot summer. Hot weather seems to increase the virus' transmissibility, Petersen said.

Pass it on: More than 1,100 cases of West Nile virus have occurred in the United States this year so far.

Ore. rider gets stolen bike back, puts on YouTube

SEATTLE (AP) ? Jake Gillum loves his bike. So when it got stolen in Portland, Ore., while he was on a date, he was determined to get it back.

The quest seemed hopeless, but a week of poring over online postings for his 2009 carbon fiber Fuji paid off when he spotted the road bike offered for sale in Seattle. That sparked an elaborate interstate sting operation last weekend in which Gillum not only got his bicycle back but used it to chase down the suspect before police arrested him.

Gillum documented it all on YouTube under the username Simon Jackson.

"This is why you don't steal from bicyclists!" Gillum shouts as he trails the suspect while recording with his phone. "Because we care about our rides! Because I will go 160 miles to get my $2,500 bike back! You are going to jail!"

In an interview Thursday, the 28-year-old added: "Best feeling in the world, seeing that guy get locked in the police car."

The success of the sting heartened bicyclists around the world as the video spread. Such stings are far from unheard of ? there have been at least four in Seattle alone recently, two involving the same suspect ? but they don't typically wind up on video that goes viral.

In May, Dave O'Hern got one of his two stolen bikes back when its new owner took it to a repair shop that recognized a crack in the frame. The new owner, University of Washington law student Noel Merfeld, helped O'Hern set up a sting to catch the guy Merfeld bought it from. Police showed up and arrested a man who had been arrested in a similar bust two months earlier.

Also in Seattle, Matt Goyer retrieved his stolen bicycle last month after seeing it on Craigslist. The seller let him take it for a test spin ? and Goyer never looked back.

"People have a right to reclaim their stolen property. It belongs to them," said Seattle police spokesman Sean Whitcomb. "Obviously, the first and best method to do that is through the police."

Gillum's ordeal began Aug. 3 in Portland when he realized his bike was missing and filed a police report. He has no car and uses it to travel to odd jobs and yard work around town, as well as for exercise. Over the next week, he checked online obsessively and on Aug. 9 saw it advertised in Seattle.

"I flipped out ? just started jumping in the air and yelling," Gillum said. "Immediately I thought, 'I have to go up there and get it, no matter what.'"

He talked it over with friends, as well as his dad, who gave him some sage advice: Don't be an idiot. Don't beat up the guy.

A plot began to take shape.

Gillum and two friends, Chris Williams and Williams' younger brother, Shannon Hardie, created the online persona Simon Jackson with a fake email account. They also used a cellphone app to call the seller and make it appear they were calling from Seattle. When the seller sent photos of the bike, Gillum became even more certain it was his.

The trio drove north and met the seller outside a grocery store. The others called police as Gillum started chatting with the seller, later identified as Craig Eric Ackerman, also of Portland.

Gillum said that about 40 minutes later, police still hadn't arrived and the seller seemed to be getting nervous, so Gillum agreed to buy it and said he needed to walk inside a nearby bank. A teller told him she would call security, and Gillum walked back outside and began filming.

"Here's the deal. I live in Portland, and you stole my bicycle," Gillum says.

"All right," the nervous seller replies. "I don't know what you want me to say."

"I would like you to apologize."

"For what?"

"For stealing my bicycle."

The seller insisted he lives in Seattle and bought the bicycle off Craigslist, though he acknowledged knowing it was stolen. When Gillum says police are on the way, Ackerman runs away, so Gillum hops on his newly recovered bike, starts chasing and repeats: "He cannot get away from me!"

Police arrived and arrested Ackerman for investigation of possessing and trafficking in stolen property. He has not been charged, and his lawyer, Holli Giffin, declined to comment because of the pending investigation, except to say, "We have a lot of concerns about the way things have been portrayed."

Whitcomb, the police spokesman, cautioned people against using stings without being absolutely sure they're right, which can be difficult using a picture on an Internet message board.

"Personal injury is not worth your bike," he said.
