This year's Black Friday shoppers were split into two distinct groups: those who wanted to fall into a turkey-induced slumber and those who'd rather shop.

Stores typically open in the wee hours of the morning on the day after Thanksgiving that's called Black Friday because of retail folklore that it's when merchants turn a profit for the year. But after testing how shoppers would respond to earlier hours last year, stores such as Target and Toys R Us this year opened as early as Thanksgiving evening. That created two separate waves of shoppers.

Sam Chandler, 55, and his wife, Lori Chandler, 54, were a part of the early group. By the time they reached the Wal-Mart in Greenville, S.C. early Friday, they had already hit several stores, including Target and Best Buy. In fact, they had been shopping since midnight.

"We've learned over the years, you have to stand in line early and pray," Sam said.

Stu and April Schatz, residents of Rockland County, N.Y., preferred to get a later start. They went to the Shops at the Garden State Plaza mall in Paramus, N.J., which didn't open until 7 a.m. on Black Friday, because they didn't want to deal with the crowds that show up for openings late night on Thanksgiving or midnight on Black Friday.

"It's so much more civilized going in the morning," said April Schatz, a teacher. "We wanted to enjoy our evening."

The earlier hours are an effort by stores to make shopping as convenient as possible for Americans, who they fear won't spend freely during the two-month holiday season in November and December because of economic uncertainty. Many shoppers are worried about high unemployment and a package of tax increases and spending cuts known as the "fiscal cliff" that will take effect in January unless Congress passes a budget deal by then.

At the same time, Americans have grown more comfortable shopping on websites that offer cheap prices and the convenience of being able to buy something from smartphones, laptops and tablet computers from just about anywhere. That puts added pressure on brick-and-mortar stores, which can make up to 40 percent of their annual revenue during the holiday shopping season, to give consumers a compelling reason to leave their homes.

That's becoming more difficult: the National Retail Federation, an industry trade group, estimates that overall sales in November and December will rise 4.1 percent this year to $586.1 billion, below last year's 5.6 percent growth. . But the online part of that is expected to rise 15 percent to $68.4 billion, according to Forrester Research.

As a result, brick-and-mortar retailers have been trying everything they can to lure consumers into stores. Some stores tested the earlier hours last year, but this year more retailers opened their doors late on Thanksgiving or at midnight on Black Friday. In addition to expanding their hours, many also are offering free layaways and shipping, matching the cheaper prices of online rivals and updating their mobile shopping apps with more information.

"Every retailer wants to beat everyone else," said C. Britt Beemer, chairman of America's Research Group, a research firm based in Charleston, S.C. "Shoppers love it."

Indeed, some holiday shoppers seemed to find stores' earlier hours appealing. Julie Hansen, a spokeswoman at Mall of America in Minneapolis, said 30,000 people showed up for the mall's midnight opening, compared with 20,000 last year. She noted that shoppers are coming in waves, and sales aren't just being shifted around.

"This is additional dollars," Hansen said.

About 11,000 shoppers were in lines wrapped around Macy's flagship store in New York City's Herald Square when it opened at midnight on Black Friday. That's up from an estimated 9,000 to 10,000 shoppers who showed up the store's midnight opening last year.

Joan Riedewald, a private aide for the elderly, and her four children ages six to 18, were among them. By that time, she already had spent about $100 at Toys R Us, which opened at 8 p.m., and planned to spend another $500 at Macy's before heading to Old Navy.

"I only shop for sales," she said.

But some shoppers decided to stick to traditional Black Friday shopping hours. Joe Russell was hunting for a great deal on a large flat-screen TV and went to the Best Buy store in Watertown, Mass., shortly after midnight on Friday. But the long line of shoppers gunning for door-buster promotions deterred him from braving the freezing temperatures. So Russell, 47, returned to the store after sunrise and got a different TV for "a decent price."

"This is the earliest I've ever shopped," he said.

Elizabeth Garcia, a sales representative from the Bronx borough of New York City, also decided on a later shopping start at about 3:30 a.m. at Toys R Us in New York's Times Square. As a result Garcia, who has three children ages three, five and seven, believes she dodged some of the lines on Thanksgiving when the store opened at 8 p.m. That's good news since the crowds got to her last year, and she almost got into a fight over a Tinker Bell couch.

"This year I wasn't about to kill people," she said.

Meanwhile, Nicole Page of Bristol, Conn., shopped with her sister at a Wal-Mart in Manchester, Conn., at about 4:45 a.m. on Black Friday out of tradition. Page, who recently finished school and started working as a nurse, bought an electric fireplace for $200 that she said was originally $600. Her shopping cart also had candy canes, a nail clipper for her dog and other stocking stuffers.

"We try to make a tradition of it. It's kind of exciting," she said.

Ultrasound pictures show difference in fetus yawning and other mouth openings

Ultrasound scans of faces in utero can distinguish between when a fetus yawns and when it just opens its mouth, according to research published November 28 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Nadja Reissland from the University of Durham and colleagues at other institutions.

The researchers found that during the period between 24 to 36 weeks of gestation, they could distinguish between yawns and simple mouth openings on ultrasound images of fetal faces. They report that simple mouth openings occur less often than yawns and the frequency of these openings declines from 24 weeks of gestation onward. More than half of all mouth openings are yawns at 24 weeks of gestation, and the frequency of yawns begins to decline at a later stage (28 weeks onward).

The study suggests that trends in yawning behavior may potentially be used to track healthy fetal development. Reissland says, "Fetus yawning is not contagious, nor do they yawn because they are "sleepy". Instead, frequency of yawning in the womb might be related to activity-dependent brain maturation early in gestation."

The ancient Maya civilization may have risen ? and then fallen ? in response to climate change, scientists report after creating precise climate records going back 2,000 years.

The researchers, whose findings appear in the current issue of the journal Science, reconstructed rainfall patterns using cross-sections of stalagmites from a cave near the ancient city of Uxbenka, in what is now southern Belize. First, they dated the samples with the technique called uranium-thorium dating; then, to generate a climate record, they measured oxygen isotopes, which are sensitive to rainfall.

The early classic Maya period ? about A.D. 450 to 660 ? ?was remarkably wet,? said an author of the study, Douglas Kennett, a geo-archaeologist at Penn State. ?There was a proliferation of population, an increase in agriculture and a rise in divine kings that became prominent leaders.?

But then things dried up. The researchers compared the climate record with an existing ?war index? ? a log of hostile events based on how often certain keywords occurred in Maya inscriptions on stone monuments ? and found a strong correlation between drought and warfare between cities.

?About A.D. 660, you get indications of some social stress that goes up in tandem with this drying period,? Dr. Kennett said.

Maya cities were linked, but each operated with its own autonomous political structure. When resources were strained, the groups may have turned against one another.

Over several hundred years, ?the social fabric was eventually destabilized,? Dr. Kennett said. Most Maya cities collapsed between A.D. 800 and 900.

You bring coalitions together of progressives and libertarian conservatives and say yes we have to cut across the board. Right now they say compromise on preservation of certain programs, but you have to get together and bring people together of different viewpoints. I do not call that compromise because I do not think anyone should sacrifice their principles. But there's no reason in the world you cannot get progressives and libertarians to agree on some of these cuts and spending we do not need."

On what he'd need to see in order for Congress to come together and approve on some kind of deal:

"As long as they move in the direction of less government. Maybe taking their oath of office seriously?That is long gone. We're so far gone. We're over the cliff. We cannot get enough people in congress in the next 5-10 years who will do the wise things. We have to prepare for having already fallen off the fiscal cliff. it is like what is going on in Greece. Every day you hear of a solution and things pop up, but they are in debt and spend too much money and then the people go out in the street and demonstrate. Romney was hit because one issue he was correct on, he was opposed the bailouts, and the people in the Midwest voted against him. Oh, we have to be taken care of! So that vote was sort of like what we are laughing at in Greece. Those 80,000 people do not want anything cut, they will not compromise. It is the people that are that way. That is why our revolution is significant. We're trying to change people's minds. That is why changing the minds of young people is so important."

"If you look at the numbers and the way pure democracy works, pure democracy is dangerous. The majority dictates against the minority. Right now the majority are receiving a check. That is why people were sort of surprised with these conditions that the president could get reelected. That is a bad sign in that there are more on the receiving end. People do not want anything cut. They want all the bailouts to come. They want the Fed to keep printing money. They do not believe we of gone off the cliff or are close to going off the cliff. They think we can patch it over, that we can somehow come up with a magic solution. You cannot have a budgetary solution if you do not change what the role of government should be. As long as you think we have to please the world and run this welfare state, all we will argue about is who will get the loot. "

On why he quit Congress:

"I think people had enough of me. I do not have much confidence in the political system and never did. My goal has always been to change people's minds because as long as people demand more government, they will get it. Government reflects the people. That is why I am excited to go to college campuses and I will continue to do that. That's where I will get a lot of support and they are saying, I agree with you, we do not need more government, we want more freedom and we want to be able to keep our own money. We want sound money. If you have sound money coming in you do not have deficits because you cannot print more money."

Environmental Risk a Top Concern for Mid-Sized Companies ...

Environmental risk was named as the top emerging concern by 35 percent of surveyed mid-sized companies in Europe, according to an ACE Group study.

Opinion Matters, which conducted the research for multi-line and casualty insurer ACE Group, spoke to 606 European risk managers, including chief financial officers and chief operating officers, responsible for buying insurance. The managers worked for companies with revenues of at least ?500 million ($797 million).

Among UK respondents, 38 percent listed environmental risk as a top emerging concern, followed by 33 percent of respondents in France.

More than 40 percent of respondents cited the impact of previous disasters on their own business as a reason for their increased concern. The same percentage said increased attention from media, interest groups or society in general has been a primary driver in changing their approach to environmental risk.

Two-thirds of companies believe environmental risk is an increasingly important issue for every 21st century business, the study said. About 54 percent also expect the level of risk their own company faces to increase over the next five years.

That concern hasn?t always translated into action. Only 52 percent of European companies have crisis management procedures to handle an environmental incident, ACE Group said. One quarter of companies surveyed believe they don?t need crisis management for these risks at all.

Companies face more legislation related to the environment. ACE estimates there are more than 250 pieces of legislation in the UK that have environmental implications. It used to be just called Thanksgiving. Now the day is increasingly called Black Friday Eve or Black Thursday, as retailers double down on early opening hours for the kickoff of the holiday shopping season.

This Thanksgiving, some retailers, including the world?s largest, are opening earlier than ever, before the dishes are even cleared from the table.

?This is actually something we?ve seen really take off with consumers in recent years,? said Kathy Grannis, spokeswoman at the National Retail Federation. Last year, 24 percent of shoppers said they were at a store at midnight on Black Friday. Just two years earlier, Grannis said, that number was only 9 percent.

Wal-Mart will start the first of three Black Friday sales at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving evening, followed by 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Last year, Wal-Mart opened at 10 p.m. Thanksgiving night."Our customers told us that they loved our Thanksgiving event earlier last year and asked for it again," said Wal-Mart spokeswoman Sarah Spencer. "Our highest customer traffic was during the 10 p.m. hour."

Sears is opening its stores at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, too. ?Last year, it opened at 4 a.m. on Black Friday. Like Wal-Mart, it is spacing out its sales: one at the opening, the second at 4 a.m. on Friday. Kmart stores will be open on Thanksgiving Day from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., then will close and reopen from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. They will reopen for a second time at 5 a.m. on Black Friday.

Macy?s, Best Buy and Kohl?s all will open at midnight this year.

Target, J.C. Penney and Toys ?R? Us haven?t announced when they will open their stores for Black Friday. Last year, Target was one of many retailers that opened at midnight. Penney opened its doors at 4 a.m., while Toys ?R? Us was an early adopter of the ultra-early trend, opening at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving night.

Some fans posted complaints to Wal-Mart?s Facebook page in response to the news of the Thanksgiving night sales, but analysts say the payoff prompts companies to risk the backlash.

Marshal Cohen, chief retail analyst at NPD Group, said that last year, stores that extended their hours to open earlier saw an average 22 percent increase in sales. So, shoppers might complain about the sales encroaching on Thanksgiving dinner, but they?re still turning out to buy things anyway.

?It?s proved to be a very important strategy,? he said. ?Retailers are clearly willing to take on whatever wrath they may get by breaking tradition.?

?It helps them manage their traffic flow better,? said Barbara Wyckoff, an analyst with CLSA/Credit Agricole Securities (USA). By expanding the shopping window and staggering sales times, retailers like Wal-Mart are trying to avoid being overwhelmed with a wave of shoppers all at once, which contributes to a poor customer experience.

While it may give traditionalists heartburn, analysts say Black Friday Eve isn?t going away.?This will continue as far as they can push it,? Wyckoff said. ?I think it?s going to continue to be earlier and earlier.?

What people are actually buying on Black Friday is also good for retailers. ?What we learned last year is a lot of that early business is self-purchase and impulse buys,? Cohen said. ?It creates a whole new dynamic of retail opportunity.?

The one thing that could put a halt to stores? temporal arms race would be a resurgent economy.

?We didn?t see these types of promotions before 2008 and 2009,? Grannis said. ?If we?re no longer at a point where people are looking for extreme discounts... and they?re really back to just looking for great gift ideas, there could be a shift in how many people want to be out there at midnight.?

Google reveals most common allergy symptoms and peak of suffering

ANAHEIM, CA. (November 9, 2012) While it's believed that Nostradamus' prophecies predicted many historical events, his digital successor, the Internet, may be foreseeing the height of allergy suffering. According to allergist Leonard Bielory, M.D., American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) board member, Google search volume is shedding light on the most common allergy symptoms, when searches peak and how they pertain to pollen types.

In his research, being presented at the ACAAI Annual Scientific Meeting, Dr. Bielory found that, due to tree pollens, nasal allergy symptoms are the most common searches from March through May. Symptoms include sneezing, a runny and itchy nose, and stuffiness due to blockage or congestion.

"Allergy sufferers experience heighted allergy symptoms in the spring season, and again during September due to weed pollen and grass season," said Dr. Bielory. "The peak week for all allergy symptom searches is the second week of May, suggesting sufferers may be experiencing both spring and summer allergy symptoms."

Nasal allergy symptoms were also commonly searched during the fall months. The second most common symptom, based on search volume, is eye allergies.

With spring allergy season being only four short months away, the ACAAI advises sufferers to schedule an appointment with their board-certified allergist during the winter months to find relief.

"Treating symptoms early, before they appear, means less suffering," said Dr. Bielory. "An allergist will develop a customized treatment plan to keep you living an active, healthy lifestyle."

According to an ACAAI patient survey, board-certified allergists are successful in treating up to 90 percent of patients with seasonal allergies and 70 to 80 percent with perennial allergies.

Witness: Soldier remorseful after Afghan killings

Defense attorneys for U.S. Army Sgt. Robert Bales called witnesses Wednesday in hearings that mark the start of the military justice process for the soldier who is accused of slaughtering 16 Afghan villagers, mostly women and children, in a pre-dawn rampage in March.

A friend of Bales, 1st Sgt. Vernon Bigham, told the court that Bales seemed remorseful after he was taken into custody after the massacre and seemed to want to confess, but invoked his right to remain silent.

The Article 32 hearings at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., where Bales is based, are to determine whether there is enough evidence to put Bales through a full court martial.

Proceedings started Monday with prosecutors laying out their version of the events. They said the sergeant acted alone and with "chilling premeditation," leaving his base?in Kandahar province twice in one night and killing 16 people, mostly women and children in nearby villages as they slept.

Bales faces 16 counts of premeditated murder and six counts of attempted murder, as well as charges of assault and wrongfully possessing and using steroids and alcohol while deployed.

The shooting, which if proven at trial would be the worst civilian slaughter by U.S. forces since the Vietnam War, eroded already-strained U.S.-Afghan ties after over a decade of conflict in the country.

Military prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

The defense team has not revealed its strategy, but lead civilian defense attorney John Henry Browne has suggested over the past few months that Bales may not have acted alone and may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Bales was on his fourth combat deployment in 11 years and suffered a concussive head injury in a previous deployment.

Bales has not participated in a medical evaluation known as a "sanity board," because his lawyers have objected to having him meet with Army doctors without them present.

The defendant has appeared in court wearing camouflage fatigues with his head shaved, but has remained silent except to say he understands the charges and his rights. Bales has not entered a plea, and is not expected to testify.

Conflicting accounts
On Tuesday, Bales' defense team began calling witnesses?who gave testimony that appeared to cast doubt on the assertion that Bales acted entirely alone.

Testifying Tuesday, Private First Class Derek Guinn said he was told by Afghan guards that two U.S. soldiers were seen entering the compound in the early hours of March 11, and one was seen leaving again.

But Guinn, who spoke to the guards through an interpreter, said he personally did not see anyone leaving or entering Camp Belambay.

His testimony was at odds with the U.S. Army prosecutor's case ? supported by several witnesses on Monday ? that Bales, 39, left and entered twice on his own, and was solely responsible for the Afghans' deaths.

Witnesses from the Afghan villages where the alleged killing spree took place are set to testify on Friday via video link to the hearings, expected to last two weeks. Some villagers have said that more than one U.S. soldier was present during the attacks.

Guinn's testimony was the first notable discrepancy from the version of events laid out by military prosecutors on Monday.

Covered in blood
In the first session of the hearing, lead prosecutor Lieutenant Colonel Jay Morse said Bales alone was responsible for the deaths, in two premeditated attacks. He showed the court a video taken from a surveillance balloon apparently of Bales returning to the base for a second time, just before 5 a.m.

An Army medic testified on Tuesday that he saw Bales covered in blood and that he knew from experience that the blood was not his own.

The medic, Sgt. First Class James Stillwell, said he asked Bales where the blood came from and where he had been.

Bales responded with a shrug,?Stillwell testified, and then said, "If I tell you, you guys will have to testify against me."

Cpl. David Godwin, who was among the first to encounter Bales after the alleged shootings, testified on Monday, describing the meeting as "kind of surreal," the Seattle Times reported.

Godwin, who served under Bales, was one of the people who had been drinking with him on March 10, the night before the killings. He told the court that while they drank, they watched the 2004 movie "Man on Fire," which stars Denzel Washington and is about a CIA operative turned bodyguard who goes on a killing rampage after his child is kidnapped.

After that, Godwin said, he believed Bales went to bed, the Times reported, but learned otherwise when another soldier awakened him at 2 a.m. or 3 a.m., and the two of them went to the post's outer gate looking for Bales. They finally spotted him returning to base sometime before 5 a.m., Godwin told the court.

"I kind of thought that Bob (Bales) thought... he was doing this to better us," said Godwin, according to the Times. He quoted Bales as saying: "I thought I was doing the right thing. I thought I was doing the right thing."

New York's three major airports were expected to be open Thursday morning with limited flights. Most Northeast rail service remained suspended. In New York City, some buses were running and subway service was expected to restart Thursday.

The busy Northeast travel corridor ground to a halt when Sandy slammed into New Jersey Monday evening. Train tunnels flooded, power went out, and forecasts of high winds forced airlines to cancel thousands of flights.

FlightStats said the storm has caused more than 19,000 cancellations, including 2,820 cancellations Wednesday. The loss of East Coast flights stranded tourists in New York and kept travelers stuck in Hong Kong. The lack of trains left suburban commuters without a way into work.

On Wednesday, the first trickle of air travelers reached New York since the storm hit. John F. Kennedy International and Newark, N.J.'s Liberty Airport both opened, but flights were limited. The airlines that did operate were mostly positioning planes for a fuller schedule on Thursday.

New York's third major airport, LaGuardia, will open at 7 a.m. EDT on Thursday, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey said on its website. LaGuardia has just two runways that jut out into bays and are only a few feet above sea level. They were inundated by Sandy's huge surge

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines Inc. and Southwest Airlines Co. said they plan to restart LaGuardia flights on Thursday. Delta spokesman Morgan Durrant said the airline intends to start landing planes around 7 a.m. and hopes to operate half of its scheduled LaGuardia flights on Thursday. Southwest plans to start flights around 1 p.m.

"There is some damage to our offices and facilities," American Airlines spokeswoman Andrea Huguely said. "It's not pretty, but we can operate. Our employees are cleaning up for our customers."

Airline employees will face challenges getting to work. Not only is mass transit severely restricted, but driving in will be more difficult. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that only cars with at least three passengers would be allowed to cross a bridge or enter a tunnel.

"There are a lot of contingencies before we can re-open at LaGuardia," Southwest spokesman Paul Flaningan said. "It's still barricaded at the front entrance, which makes drop-offs from taxis and buses difficult."

Amtrak said it plans to restore some service on Friday to and from New York City, which has been without intercity train service since it was walloped by superstorm Sandy.

The railroad said the removal of water from flooded train tunnels under the Hudson and East rivers is continuing so that repairs to tracks, signals and power systems can be made. A Friday schedule is expected to be released Thursday.

Service to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey has been restored, but Northeast Regional service between Newark and New Haven, Conn., and Acela Express service for the length of the Northeast Corridor are canceled for Thursday. Empire Service between New York City and other cities in the state, and Canada are also canceled for Thursday

Airlines continued to waive fees to change tickets for flights to New York airports. Delta and United said that anyone who planned to fly there through Saturday could change their ticket. However, the re-booked travel still had to begin by Nov. 9, giving travelers a relatively narrow window to make their trip.

American's waiver was broader, covering New York tickets through Nov. 7, and allowing rebooked travel through Dec. 20.

Airports in Washington and Philadelphia re-opened on Tuesday.
