Ferrari Unveils 730-hp Street Fighter

A week before the official reveal at the Geneva Auto Show, Ferrari released pictures and specs for the most powerful road car the company has ever produced. Dubbed (a bit akwardly) the F12berlinetta, the front-engined coupe replaces the exisiting 599 GTB. Under the hood is a 6.3-liter V-12 that produces 730 hp, a staggering 118 more than the 12-cylinder in the 599. The new motor revs to 8700 rpm. We can't wait to hear its wail.

What's more, the new car has tidier dimensions and a new aluminum space frame and body. It should be lighter than the nearly two-ton 599, further enhancing the power-to-weight ratio. Expect a sprint to 60 mph in around three seconds flat.

The biggest limiting factor for speed will be traction. Even with the computer-controlled dual-clutch transmission mounted at the rear axle, it will be a challenge to funnel all that power to the overworked tires.

We've always thought that Ferrari's "starter" car, the quarter-million-dollar 458, is the most exciting car in the lineup. The F12 will likely change that perception. But, naturally, expect to pay for the privilege?the starting price will be around $400,000.
