Letting Your Winners Run: The Disciplined Art Of 'Sitting' | Personal ...

?Let your winners run.? Guessing you have heard that one a few times. Easy in thought and words, but perhaps the hardest investment axiom to follow ? in my experience, even more challenging than ?sell your losers.?
?
In my last post, Understanding When Cash Is King, I referenced legendary trader Jesse Livermore?s quote: ?It never was my thinking that made the big money for me. It always was my sitting? via the must-read Reminiscences of a Stock Operator. In that post, I discussed the value of Livermore?s ?sitting? as it pertained to cash balances, whereas here I transition his advice to taking and holding individual investment positions.
?
As I look back at my own results, I?ve recognized trends consistent with Livermore?s quote. It?s quite possible to profitably and frequently trade in and out of positions and pocket gains, but the winners that leap off the page seem to always be the ones that required sitting.
?
For instance, over a 15-month period I logged 14 different short positions in Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (NASDAQ:GMCR), all of which were exited profitably. If I had followed Livermore?s advice though, the first short position I took on July 29, 2011, at 105.49 would possibly still be on the books, and I?d be counting dollars instead of nickels and dimes given today?s price. Inversely, that escapade reminds me of not confusing genius with a bull market.
?
These are the investments that positively skew your results ? early investors in Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) who bought, held, and sat through the 1990s come to mind. More recent investors in companies like Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), John Paulson?s housing short or David Einhorn?s Lehman ? these are all positions that drove outsized returns but demanded extraordinary long-term patience.
?
Following Livermore?s ?sitting? advice helps to accomplish another thing -- a development of extreme discipline that forces you to try to buy right. The mentality of sitting and waiting demands selectivity, as you want to be as certain as possible that you are ?sitting? with the right positions. It may seem counter-intuitive in today?s schizophrenic, high-frequency trading market, but perhaps the best way to thrive is to lower your frequency, and ?sit.?

MILITARY PAIN?

Emily Walsh sent these thoughts along a few weeks ago. Because of the heavy load of pieces we?ve received as well as the busy campaign, we just got around to putting this up. But it does detail the aftermath that a modern day Veteran must deal with in post war Iraq and Afghanistan.?

Health Risks of the Military and Dealing With Them?

Whether serving just one tour or retiring after thirty years of active duty, military personnel of all branches of the armed forces face a variety of risks to emotional and physical health, just because of their service. Because military service can cause damage, both major and minor, to an individual?s well being, the US armed forces and the Department of Veterans? affairs continue to develop a variety of support services for both active duty personnel and veterans. In addition to the obvious risks of combat duty and the well-publicized aftermath, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, military personnel are at risk for developing a variety of illness when stationed at various locations around the world. For all personnel, whether in combat or not, severe stress can affect mood, sleep, appetite and job performance ? or trigger a substance abuse problem, depression or suicide. Those stationed far from home are forced to miss children?s births and family special occasions, or even the deaths of loved ones. In some cases, experiences during active duty have long lasting effects that don?t manifest themselves immediately, but cause long-term problems for soldiers and their families. Combat troops exposed to blasts from explosive devices may not show signs of traumatic brain injury until months later. Likewise, those exposed to chemicals like the Vietnam-era Agent Orange may find themselves battling a variety of neurological problems, while those exposed to asbestos ? widely used in military applications between World War II and Vietnam ? are at high risk for mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer caused by asbestos fibers in the tissues. Acknowledging the potential health risks of military service, a variety of medical, legal and social services have been introduced to help active duty personnel, veterans and their families to cope with the aftereffect of the many health risks caused by military service. On most military bases, counselors and social workers are available to offer assistance to spouses and families left behind when a soldier is away, and these services are also available to help returning soldiers cope with the transition back to family life. Services supporting active duty personnel include substance abuse and mental health services, and ongoing counseling, therapy and rehabilitation for those injured in combat or accidents while serving. Veterans, too, are eligible for a variety of services to help them cope with the aftermath of experiences during their service, including legal advice, referrals for social services, and support groups to deal with ongoing mental and physical health issues. For those with life threatening illnesses such as mesothelioma from long-term asbestos exposure or exposure to military-mandated toxic substances, services include legal advocacy to file claims for assistance, as well as specialized health services and family support. Although military service can pose serious health risks, soldiers and their families can expect support and assistance in dealing with those risks.?

?WHAT?S CHARLIE UP TO??

Last year during the election for Luzerne County Council, Jenkins Township resident Charlie Hatcko was a frequent traveler on the campaign trail ?Bible Buck? is not sitting still in this Presidential election and has lent his support to a Pro Life candidate. Here are his thoughts: Let us look at what Scripture and what the Church Fathers have stated about Abortion. (Exodus 20:13) and (Deut. 5:17) says --Thou shalt not kill. Human life must be respected and protected. Life begins at conception. Abortion is homicide yes murder. Sacred Scripture condemns murder. Look at (Job 24:13-14) gives evidence the murderer rebels against the light. (Jeremiah 22:3) gives evidence to do not shed innocent blood. Abortion is an abomination against the Almighty God. Abortion is called "the culture of death" by former Pope John Paul II. Human life must be absolutely protected and respected from birth to death. The inviolable right of every human being must be respected from conception to death. In America there is a false pluralism regarding issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage and euthanasia. Sacred Scripture gives a grave warning regarding falsehood. (Isaiah 5:20) states-Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil. In (Matthew 18:7)- Jesus exhort --Woe to those who cause scandals, who through scandals come. (Jude 11) says--Woe to those who walk in the way of Cain. Cain who was the first creature created by human beings, was was a murderer, an apostate, a reviler of God, a deceiver and the leader in humanistic worldly culture. Cain is a model of unbelief and fratracide. (Genesis 4:8-10)-- gives evidence that Cain was a murderer. Abortion is murder in the eyes of God. In (John 10:10)-- Jesus exhorts---I came to give life and give life abundantly. Although Scripture nowhere mentions the word "abortion", there can be a deducible inferences taken from Biblical Revelation regarding abortion. Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium absolutely forbids abortion. Look at the following Biblical texts closely,--(Jeremiah 1:5)-- Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you. Look at Sacred Scripture--(Job 10:8-12)---Thy hands fashioned and made me; Will you now turn and destroy me? Remember that thou molded me like clay, and thou will turn me to dust again. You clothe me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews. Thou hast granted me life and steadfast love. Look closely at the following Biblical Text--(Psalm 139:13-15)---For You created my inward parts, thou didst knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise thee, for thou are fearful and wonderful. Wonderful are thy works! Thou knowest me right well; my frame was not hidden from thee, when I was being made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the earth. Thy eyes beheld my unformed substance. Look closely at (Isaiah 44:2)--Thus says the Lord who made you, who formed you in the womb and will help you. (Psalm 22:10-11) and (Wisdom 7:1-6)-- give affirmative Biblical evidence regarding the formation of man by God. Tradition of the Church Fathers absolutely condemns abortion. Abortion was forbidden in the early foundation of the Church. The Didache ? the writings of the Apostles from about 70 to 80 A.D. ? gives absolute affirmative evidence that one must not procure an abortion; The Epistle of Barnabas (75A.D.), Section 19 gives absolute affirmation that one may not slay the child procuring an abortion. Athenagoras, writing in 177 A.D., gives evidence that women who use drugs to bring on an abortion are murderers. In fact the word Sorcerer --Greek--Adjective-(pharmakia) (Rev. 9:21)--(Rev. 22:15)--means medicines and potions-- one who made drugs for killing the fetus. Terullian, throughout 197-210 A.D., gives numerous writings that absolutely forbid abortion, especially through surgery. He has written that life begins at conception because the soul is given by God at conception. St. Hippolytus, in 228 A.D. in his Refutation of All Heresies, gives evidence of woman taken drugs to prevent conception. St. Basil the Great, St. Jerome, and St. John Chrysostum all wrote of the evils of abortion.Divine Tradition--(paradosis)-- condemns and castigates abortion. When we look at the biological process occurring in the conception and gestation of the human body in the female uterus, many have claimed that the blastula is not really a human body, but a mass of undeveloped tissue. Modern medical science has shown the gestation process under a microscope, assigning terms to the primitive stages of development such as zygote, blastula, embryo and fetus. Medical science has proven the Church Magisterium regarding abortion correct. The Bible condems murder. (Matt. 5:21) Jesus gives evidence Thou shalt not murder. (Matt. 19:18) gives evidence--Do not murder. (Mark 10:19) gives evidence--Do not murder. (Luke 18:20) states--Do not murder. The Psalms gives evidence the Lord abhors murder--Yes the bloodthirsty. Look at (Psalm 9:12)--When He avenges blood He remembers them.. Abortion is used by politicians sometimes for political expediency. Look at (Isaiah 59:3)--(Ezekiel 22:8) regarding the shedding of blood. --(Romans 13:9) gives evidence--Thou shalt not murder. (1 Tim. 1:9) gives evidence the law is made for the murder.(James 2:11) gives evidence Do not murder. (1 John 3:15) gives evidence whoever hates his brother is a murderer and that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. Mitt Romney is the Pro-Life candidate by many Pro-Life Groups--Look at my reasons--(Matt. 24:4)--Mark 13:5)--(Luke 21:8) Jesus exhorts--Do not be deceived. (Malachi 1:14) states--Cursed be the deceiver. In the years 2002 to 2004 -There was a Reublican Supreme Court--A Republican US Congress--A Republican US Senate and a Republican President--George W. Bush--Bottom Line We still have abortion--Republicans are experts using Pro-Life in political expediency. President Obama actions are abominable --he supports abortion and same-sex marriage. Mitt Romney has supported abortion and same sex in his political career-as Governor of Mass. Life Site--A Pro-Life Website has reported the Chief Executive Officer of the Morning After Abortion Pill --Yes CEO Phil Frost ran a $50,000 dollar a plate Fund Raiser for Mitt Romney--several months ago.Yes May 11th 2012 in Flordia I will not be deceived--I will Support and Vote America's Party Candidate Tom Hoefling--from Iowa-- for President. America's Party is the former American Independent Party. I know the best Pro-Life Candidate. Even Gary Johnson New Mexico Governor --Liberatarian party and Virgil Goode Virginia -Congressman Constituition Party have much better--yes much better voting records on abortion than Mitt.Romney. That is why the Republican Party has challenged their right to run in Penn. for President.?
Principles over Politics--- True Pro-Life Pennsylvania Voters Write in America's Party Candidate -Tom Hoefling America's Party is the former American Independent Party. Alan Keyes a close associate with Tom Hoefling ran on this Party for President in 2008--Tom Hoefling as worked for Pro-Life for many many years-- Again True Pennsylvania moral Pro-Lifers Write In --Tim Hoefling --President--?

God Bless You--Thank You Elector for America's Party

Ardera White entitled to respect in Sunderland's Owners Bonus - Bettor

Ardera White entitled to respect in Sunderland?s Owners Bonus Series Heat 1

It will be a foolish move to ignore Ardera White?s chances in the opening heat of Sunderland?s Owners Bonus Series on Friday, because the white and black bitch is brimming with high confidence following a fresh strike.

She certainly deserves plenty of respect, despite the fact that victories usually don?t come to her way frequently. After a few terrible defeats at the A1 level, the maverick bitch stepped down on the grading ladder, which helped her regain momentum.

A strong start steered the bitch to a commanding position last time. After getting her head in front, she made no blunder, and retained the advantage until the finishing line. With the help of an excellent effort, she secured the first rank by two and a quarter lengths.

S. Linley?s trainee has the draw in her favour. Starting the run from the red box will give her a huge opportunity to take an early lead. And if she succeeds in doing so, her chances of taking an easy win will be very bright.

Although she does not have a good record at this level, it is hard to underestimate her especially a recent win. She is making her way back to this class with more determination and confidence.

Other hounds in the pack are: Black Jedamac, Cain, Lord Goff, Scritti Politti and Debs Aglish. The officials are due to kick off the 450 metres affair at 21:32 GMT. The victor will receive a handsome prize of 133 pounds.

Scritti Politti needs to bring A-game to upset the applecart. Cain has a role to play. However, we expect him to finish only among first three positions. Lord Goff is struggling at this level, and the misery is likely to continue today. Similarly, Debs Aglish would not be writing home about the record in this grade.

Black Jedamac, on the other hand, has a significant role to play. The black dog is in good rhythm, and will be able to create problems for the opponents, if allowed to showcase talent. Any crowding, however, will prove costly for the trainee of Y. Bell. Good luck to all the participants.

Grandson of N. Korea's late leader in TV debut

By Kari Huus, NBC News

The 17-year-old grandson of?late North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il granted a TV interview providing a rare look at a member of the secretive Kim family dynasty.

"I've always dreamed that one day I would go back and make things better and make it easier for the people there,"?Kim Han Sol said?in the interview posted on YouTube.

Kim Han Sol grew up with one foot in a privileged international community on Macau and the other in North Korea, a country known for persistent hunger and political repression under the rule of his grandfather and great grandfather.

The teen appeared articulate and impeccably dressed in a 20 minute English-language interview with reporter Elisabeth Rehn, a former United Nations official and Finnish defense minister.?It originally aired on Finnish television and was uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday, according a report by Radio Free Europe.

Kim Han Sol,?a student at the UN-sponsored World College in Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina, is the son of Kim Jong Nam ? the eldest?of Kim Jong Il?s sons and once viewed as the favorite to inherit power in the authoritarian North of the Korean peninsula. But the aging dictator instead handed the reins to Kim Jong Un, his youngest son, who is believed to be about 28.

According to the interview, Kim Han Sol?s family moved to Macau a few years after he was born, but he visited North Korea in the summers, spending time with his mother's relatives, whom he described as "ordinary" citizens. But he said he was isolated from other Korean kids and was never told that his grandfather was the country's ruler.

Interview with Kim Hon Sol, segment one

Interview with Kim Hon Sol, segment two

"Little by little, through conversations that my parents had, I started to put the puzzle pieces together," he said, and a little wistfully, described how he wished to meet his grandfather.

"I was actually waiting for him before he passed away, hoping that he would come find me because I really didn?t know if he knew that I existed," Kim told the interviewer.

Kim's father Kim Jong Nam has occasionally surfaced to speak to the international press in Macau,?sharing his view that his home country needs economic reforms and cannot survive under a dynastic succession. In the past year, the South Korean press reported, Kim Jong Nam has dropped out of sight again.

Kim Han Sol avoided media coverage when he first started at school last fall and was mobbed by cameras and reporters.

In the Finnish television interview, he said he has come to feel at home in the multicultural setting of his school and spends "hours and hours" in the evenings chatting with friends from around the world about how to resolve their respective conflicts back home.

It had been "quite an interesting experience" having a roommate from Libya, he said, "especially when the (2011) revolution happened, he was really enthusiastic about it," Kim Han Sol said. "He told me many stories about how he went home? and saw a different Libya."

The uprising against long-time leader Moammar Gadhafi finally forced the dictator from power in August 2011. Gadhafi, who fled Tripoli, was later found hiding in southern Libya, and killed shortly after at the hands of revolutionary forces.

Moffitt researcher says no survival advantage with peripheral blood stem cells versus bone marrow

H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute

Claudio Anasetti, M.D., chair of the Department of Blood & Marrow Transplant at Moffitt Cancer Center, and colleagues from 47 research sites in the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network conducted a two-year clinical trial comparing two-year survival probabilities for patients transplanted with peripheral blood stem cells or bone marrow stem cells from unrelated donors. The goal was to determine whether graft source, peripheral blood stem cells or bone marrow, affects outcomes in unrelated donor transplants for patients with leukemia or other hematologic malignancies.

Fifty transplant centers in the United States and Canada participated in this phase III study, which randomized 278 patients to receive bone marrow and 273 patients to receive peripheral blood stem cells as the graft source for transplant. The results of the study are in the Oct. 18 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.

According to the trial analyses, there were no observed differences in overall survival, relapse, non-relapse mortality, or acute graft-versus-host disease (GHVD) between the patients receiving peripheral blood stem cells or bone marrow stem cells from unrelated donors. GVHD is a serious and often deadly post-transplant complication that occurs when the newly transplanted donor cells attack the transplant recipient's body. While engraftment was faster in patients receiving peripheral blood stem cells, there was a higher incidence of overall chronic GVHD in these patients (53 percent) than in those transplanted with bone marrow stem cells (40 percent). Patients receiving transplants of peripheral blood stem cells from unrelated donors also had a higher incidence of chronic GVHD affecting multiple organs (46 percent) than patients who received bone marrow stem cells (31 percent).

"Although peripheral blood stem cells from related donors have demonstrated clinical benefits, our trial demonstrates that when these stem cells originate from unrelated donors, they are not superior to bone marrow stem cells in terms of patient survival, and they increase the risk for chronic GVHD," said Anasetti, lead study author. "More effective strategies to prevent GVHD are needed to improve outcomes for all patients receiving unrelated donor transplants."

Peripheral blood stem cells are stem cells originally found in the bone marrow that have been moved into the blood stream by a special regimen of drugs. Unlike bone marrow stem cells, which must be extracted from the bones in an operating room, peripheral blood stem cells are more easily obtained through apheresis, a process similar to regular blood donation, which collects the peripheral blood stem cells through a tube inserted in a vein. A critical step before the transplant involves finding a donor that is tissue matched to the recipient.

About one-third of patients who need a peripheral blood stem cell or bone marrow transplant for treatment of leukemia or another blood disease are able to secure a related donor. According to the National Marrow Donor Program, for the 70 percent who cannot find a donor within their family, most will be able to find an unrelated donor. Because the majority of transplant patients need cells from unrelated donors, it's necessary to better understand the risks associated with transplants of unrelated donor cells.

Clinical trials on related donor transplants have demonstrated that peripheral blood stem cell transplants in patients with leukemia and other blood diseases result in better engraftment, lower relapse rates, and increased survival compared with transplants with bone marrow stem cells. However, those trials also found that peripheral blood stem cell transplants carry an increased risk of GVHD. Patients who survive early post-transplant may develop chronic GVHD, a disabling condition managed with long-term immunosuppressant therapy.

Many transplant centers are increasingly using peripheral blood stem cells as a source for adult stem cells because of their superiority in clinical trials that have directly compared outcomes between peripheral blood stem cells and bone marrow stem cells from related donors. However, there has not been a comparative study of the two transplant sources that has prospectively analyzed patient outcomes in unrelated donor transplants.

###

The study was funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (U10HL069294), the National Cancer Institute and the National Marrow Donor Program.

The study was funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (U10HL069294), the National Cancer Institute and the National Marrow Donor Program.

An exo-tourist's guide to our closest alien planet

Now that we know our nearest neighbouring star system, Alpha Centauri, contains at least one planet, it's time to go exo-tourist and plan a trip. But be sure to read our travel guide first.

How long will it take to reach the new planet?
Alpha Centauri is roughly 4.3 light years away. Given current technology, getting there would take a minimum of 19,000 years ? if you clip along at the top speed ever achieved by a spacecraft, the Helios-2 solar probe.

Oh. Is the journey likely to speed up any time soon?
No, although Wired has jokingly called on space entrepreneur Elon Musk, founder of the company SpaceX, to get involved now that we know Alpha Centauri has a planet.

If Musk did take up the challenge, he wouldn't be the first to do so. In 1968, physicist Freeman Dyson suggested sending his proposed Project Orion spacecraft to the star system. He envisioned it as being powered by the shockwaves from a series of nuclear explosions. Travelling at just over 3 per cent of the speed of light, it would have required 300,000 1-megaton bombs and taken just 133 years to reach its destination ? all for a cost equal to just 10 per cent of US GDP.

And if Musk isn't interested, perhaps it would be worth going down the crowdfunding route.

Assuming I can buy a ticket there, exactly which destination should I be asking for?
Exoplanets normally inherit the name of their parent star, with the first planet discovered in a system labelled "b", the next "c" and so on. That's all very well, but Alpha Centauri is a binary star. The new planet orbits Alpha Centauri B, the smaller of the two stars, making its official name the slightly awkward Alpha Centauri B b.

Can't we think of a better name?
Fictional Alpha Centauri planets have already been named multiple times ? the system is a popular sci-fi stepping-stone to the galaxy ? though these planets more often orbit the larger star of the pair. In his Foundation series, Isaac Asimov bestowed the simple name Alpha upon a world orbiting Alpha Centauri A; Arthur C. Clarke dubbed his world Pasadena in The Songs of Distant Earth. The film Avatar is set on Pandora, a moon orbiting the gas giant Polyphemus around Alpha Centauri A, while players of the video game Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri are challenged to colonise a fictional planet called Chiron. Perhaps you could use some of the flight time to think of something even better.

What is the scope like for sightseeing?
Limited, given that you would probably die if you tried to set foot on the planet without some serious heat-proofing. The planet's surface is roasting hot and is probably molten lava, according Xavier Dumusque of the University of Geneva in Switzerland, who led the team that discovered the planet. What's more, we do not yet know if this world has an atmosphere. All this means the planet itself is extremely unlikely to harbour life ? although its neighbours might.

Wait? there might be more planets?
Though only one planet in the star system has been detected so far, planets are seldom loners. If the newly spotted planet has siblings, these may be rocky ? like Alpha Centauri B b. And if they are sitting further from the star, they would be better potential hosts for alien life.

Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, told the Washington Post that astronomers had scanned Alpha Centauri in the 90s for unusual radio waves in space that might be produced by intelligent beings. But the SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) project may now scan "across a broader range of radio channels in case other, more habitable planets also lurk in the system", he added.

Could I stargaze once I'm there?
Assuming you could somehow survive on the planet ? or at least hover in orbit ? the night sky wouldn't look all that different from Earth's, since the planet is so close to us. The biggest difference would be in the constellation Cassiopeia. When viewed from Earth, this looks like five stars in a W shape, but as the Centauri Dreams blog points out, it would acquire a sixth when viewed from the new planet ? our own Sun.

Is there anything else to do?
Well, if you are feeling homesick and you have brought along an extremely sensitive antenna, you might just be able to tune into Earth TV ? but it would all be repeats. Radio and TV broadcasts travel away from Earth at the speed of light, so right now Alpha Centauri is only just picking up transmissions from roughly four years and four months ago. That means any inhabitants of the star system are now watching the season four finale of Lost and are in the middle of the Tenth Doctor's run in Doctor Who. In a few months, they willbe able to watch Barack Obama get elected US president ? for the first time, that is.

93% Looper

"Looper" is just a popcorn movie, but it's a damn good one. It wins my vote for Best Popcorn Movie of 2012 so far, easily besting "Prometheus" and "Marvel's The Avengers." (It's been a particularly bad year for popcorn movies.) "Looper" was directed by Rian Johnson, a relatively young filmmaker with only two other films under his belt: "Brick" (2005) and "The Brothers Bloom" (2008). "Looper" is his first attempt at a popcorn movie. He is so good at it that he just may become the next Christopher Nolan, who made cinema history by bringing arthouse depth and braininess to action movies. (One could even go so far as to say that Nolan defined a movie era, the early 21st century, the way Steven Spielberg did in the late 1970s and early 80s.) The storyline of "Looper" is quite unique. In about the year 2070, a criminal syndicate takes care of problem people in a unique way. Instead of killing them, it sends them back in time, to the year 2040. In that year, an assassin, called a looper, is waiting for them and immediately kills them. Interesting problems arise when the looper doesn't make the kill. Also interesting is when a looper has to kill the older version of himself. This is known as "closing the loop." A looper played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt gets into just this predicament, when he is ordered to kill the older version of himself, played by Bruce Willis. Needless to say, Gordon-Levitt doesn't immediately kill Willis. They get to talking, and Willis explains that there's a psychopath who has taken over the syndicate in 2070. Willis wants to find the younger version of that psychopath and take him out. The problem is that psycho will now be about 8 years old. So Willis and Gordon-Levitt will have to kill a child. Making matters worse, they're not sure which child it is. They only have a birth date and a hospital. They must kill every boy born in that hospital on that day. Yes, there's a deep under-current of grimness to the film. Any time you stage the murder of children in a movie, audiences shudder to the depths. Eventually they find the boy they think is the psychopath, and that's when the film gets very interesting. Emily Blunt plays his mother. She realizes that her son is troubled, and she is determined to heal his emotional wounds. The key is for her to stay alive long enough to make a difference in his life. I won't reveal how it turns out, but I'll say it was tense and exciting watching the events unfold. A satisfying and moving cinematic experience. Rarely have I felt so invested in a child's healing and survival. Johnson does a remarkable job portraying this boy's psychic wounds and tapping into the unique healing power of a loving parent. Bravo to Rian Johnson. I can't wait to see what he does next.

Montenegro ruling party claims election victory

PODGORICA (Reuters) - Montenegro's ruling party leader Milo Djukanovic claimed victory in a parliamentary election on Sunday, extending his DPS party's 23-year old rule in the ex-Yugoslav republic as it starts European Union accession talks.

The new government faces a stagnant economy and rising unemployment and will have to work hard to strengthen the rule of law and fight corruption, as required by Brussels.

"As of tomorrow, we will start work on the creation of a government that will continue to lead Montenegro on its path to European... integration and work on improving the living standards of every Montenegrin citizen," Djukanovic told hundreds of cheering supporters in his party's headquarters.

He stopped short of saying it would take the prime minister's post.

An unofficial vote count by CEMI, a non-government election monitoring group, gave 50-year-old Djukanovic's Democratic Party of Socialists 45.6 percent with 94 percent of the votes counted.

That gives them 39 seats in the 81-seat parliament, which will force the DPS to turn to deputies for ethnic minorities to secure a majority. Official results will be released later in the week.

Democratic Front, the main opposition bloc, was a distant second with 23.8 percent. Its leader Miodrag Lekic tried to portray the result as disappointment for ruling party.

"The regime which has led Montenegro so far does not have enough seats to form the government alone," Lekic told a news conference. "This is the beginning of the end for the DPS."

The DPS, as well as its lanky, towering leader, remains popular despite economic troubles and persistent complaints about corruption for having championed independence from Serbia six years ago.

"Montenegro's ruling coalition is probably the only one that has managed to preserve the confidence of voters in such difficult times," Djukanovic said.

Hundreds of his supporters poured into the streets of Podgorica to celebrate, sounding car horns and waving the red national flags. Many chanted "Victory is ours" and "Milo, Milo".

The election was held some six months ahead of schedule, as the ruling coalition sought a fresh mandate during negotiations on Montenegro's eventual accession to the EU.

The DPS has made EU and NATO membership a strategic goal. After Croatia, due to join the EU next July, Montenegro is the only Balkan country that could become a member in this decade, as Serbia, Macedonia, Albania and Bosnia are way behind.

DISMISSED CORRUPTION CHARGES

Djukanovic, as either premier or president, has been the dominant political figure in the nation of 680,000 since communist Yugoslavia collapsed 20 years ago. He resigned two years ago to give way to his hand-picked successor, Igor Luksic, but remained at the helm of the party.

Italian prosecutors once accused him of involvement in massive cigarette smuggling during Yugoslavia's international isolation in the 1990s, but he was cleared of all charges and has persistently denied all such accusations by the local media and the opposition.

Vasilije Kostic, a Podgorica-based economist, said the outgoing government's mandate "has been marked by fiscal consolidation, declining growth and a struggle for the preservation of the economy".

"The next government will have to cope with the debt growth, weak recovery of the economic activity, unemployment (currently at 20 percent) and corruption," he said.

Montenegro's economy flourished after Djukanovic led it away from Serbia thanks to booming tourism and foreign investment on the scenic Adriatic coast.

But this year, Montenegro has been weighed down by the debts of its state-owned aluminum plant as well as the euro zone crisis, and the economy is forecast to grow by only 0.5 percent.

Per capita output is 5,200 euros ($6,700), barely one-fifth of the EU average, but the economy was not a big feature in the campaign.

(AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)

(AP) ? At every turn of Endeavour's stop-and-go commute through urban streets, a constellation of spectators trailed along as the space shuttle ploddingly nosed past stores, schools, churches and front yards.

Having escaped out of Earth's atmosphere two dozen times, Endeavour's slow-speed trek Saturday to its retirement center took it through the working class streets of southern Los Angeles.

In an instant, the shuttle crossings became part of history.

Along the 12-mile course, people marveled at the engineering. Some rooted for Endeavour when it appeared it might clip a lightpost. Others wondered if it could just hurry up to its destination.

Crowds gathered in front of lnglewood High School before sunrise Saturday to watch Endeavour roll by at about 2 mph. Many were bundled up sipping coffee.

Dean Martinez, who lives in Los Angeles but works in Inglewood, came with his wife and 9-year-old daughter.

"This is great for the city as a whole. It makes us proud," said Martinez, a project director for a nonprofit whose family took turns taking pictures of one another as the shuttle slowly inched by.

Added his wife, Marcia, "It's a big deal especially for this neighborhood. It's important to witness history and for our children to experience it."

Endeavour was scheduled to inch into the California Science Center late Saturday to spend the rest of its years as a museum piece.

Before it did, the shuttle made a late-morning pit stop at the Forum, where it was greeted in the arena's parking lot by a throng of cheering spectators. After crawling up Crenshaw Boulevard, the shuttle was scheduled to stop for a bit at the intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A celebration was planned, including speeches by politicians and a dance performance choreographed by Debbie Allen.

Endeavour hit the pavement before dawn Friday, trundling out of the Los Angeles International Airport on a remote-controlled 160-wheel carrier past diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs. The first day of the move was punctuated by long idle spells as crews reconfigured the carrier and leapfrogged ahead on the route to hoist power lines and dismantle traffic lights and street signs.

The pace picked up Friday night when the five-story-tall shuttle was towed over a freeway overpass by a truck (The mated shuttle and carrier were too heavy for that section.) Next to the freeway, Randy's Donuts roadside sign, featured in movies such as "Iron Man 2," landed another cameo as a shuttle backdrop.

There were bumps in the road. Several hundred Inglewood residents suffered hours-long outages when power lines were temporarily snipped. Some businesses lost customers because of street and sidewalk closures.

For most of the way, Endeavour straddled wide boulevards ? Manchester, Crenshaw, Martin Luther King Jr. The one exception was when the shuttle poked through a slightly curved residential street lined with apartment buildings on both sides. It was such a squeeze that its 78-foot wingspan towered over driveways.

John Wilkes, 69, a longtime Inglewood resident, woke up five hours earlier than usual to stake out a spot.

"This is definitely a treat," said Wilkes, who is retired from the airline industry. "But what would be a better treat is to be able to take a ride on the shuttle."

As it wound through South Los Angeles, residents welcomed its presence. Before the move, some lamented over the loss of shade as trees were chopped down to provide clearance.

When Endeavour rolls down King Boulevard, special attention will be paid to the pine trees planted in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

Endeavour may have circled the globe nearly 4,700 times, but its roots are grounded in California. Its main engines were fabricated in the San Fernando Valley. The heat tiles were invented in Silicon Valley. Its "fly-by-wire" technology was developed in the Los Angeles suburb of Downey.

It's no longer shiny and sleek like when it first rolled off the assembly line in the Mojave Desert in 1991 to replace the lost Challenger. As it cruised block-by-block, it's hard to miss what 123 million miles in space and two dozen re-entries can do to the exterior.

"You can sense the magnitude of where it's been," said Janet Dion, a family therapist from Manhattan Beach, fixating on the heat tiles that protected the shuttle during the return to Earth.

Shuffling Endeavour through city streets was a laborious undertaking ? nearly a year in the making. It could not be taken apart without damaging the delicate tiles. Airlifting it was out of the question. So was driving on freeways since it was too massive to fit through underpasses.

"This is unlike anything we've ever moved before," said Jim Hennessy, a spokesman for Sarens, the contract mover.

Once movers settled on the route, the neighborhoods with a front-row seat were transformed. Some 400 trees were cleared with the promise of replanting later. Telephone, cable and power lines were lifted sky-high. Chunks of steel plates were laid down to prevent the streets from buckling and to protect underground utilities.

It'll take days or weeks before a sense of normalcy is restored. In the case of the trees, it'll be years before the newly planted grow to adult height.

Such a move is not cheap. The cross-town transport was estimated at $10 million, to be paid for by the science center and private donations.

Endeavour's transport followed other shuttle moves. Earlier this year, Discovery taxied to the Smithsonian's annex hangar in Virginia. The prototype Enterprise was pulled by barge to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City.

Next month, Atlantis, which remained at its Cape Canaveral, Fla., home base, will be towed short distance to the Kennedy Space Center visitor's lobby.
